According to the NCAA there are more than 460,000 student athletes playing more than 24 different types of sports across the United States. If you are a college athlete or not, we are all familiar with college sports in some type of way. What we are not all familiar with is how college sports is a multi billion dollar business. The NCAA is a member led organization that overviews anything that a college athlete. The NCAA is a billion dollar organization that makes money straight off of college athletics. But not all colleges give out a scholarships. Colleges and universities are separated into three different type of divisions. You have a division 1, 2, and 3 schools. The difference between these schools is the size of the school. Typically a D1 school has the typical minimum of 14 sports. Division 1 schools give out more scholarships compared to division 2 schools because the school can afford it. Whether or not you keep the scholarship completely depends on how you perform on the field and in the classroom. College athletes have to do twice the work of a regular student. For example their days are longer because they have classes and practices. Even though there are a majority of people with this movement, many argue that paying athletes is near impossible.
There are opposing sides that claim colleges and smaller colleges could not afford to pay these athletes. It would be hard to imagine how these schools wouldn’t be able to pay these players. Karaim writes in his article about how the NCAA is a multibillion dollar industry. He claims that the NCAA should be able to afford and assist these colleges with the billions of dollars that they make every year (Karaim, 5). But the fact to say that colleges and big universities can’t afford to pay their athletes is ridiculous. There is a large group of people that argue that how can you pay just the men and not the woman.
