The Ultimate Paycheck The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) and College and University Athletic Departments are only profitable because of one reason and that is the athletes that agree to come play for the colleges and universities. The athletes are what make college athletics so successful. The NCAA is one of the most profitable nonprofit organizations in the country. According to Marc Edelman in the article “The Case for Paying College Athletes”, The college sports industry generates $11 billion in annual revenues. The revenue consumed from all sporting events put on by the University Athletic Departments and the NCAA has skyrockets in the last 15-20 years because of the improvement of Athletes. Which in return make the sporting events more enjoyable to attend or watch on television. For example, according to Michael Wilbon in the ESPN Article “College Athletes Deserve to be Paid”, he states that The NCAA and CBS made a $10.8 billion for television rights for the famous March Madness Basketball Tournament. Also in that same article, Wilbon states that ESPN made a deal that pays the BCS (The Bowl Championship Series) $500 million to cover the primetime college football games. Since then, there has been an issue of whether the athletes should receive a percentage of the revenue earned by the Universities and the NCAA.
