While this topic has really heated up in recent years, the term education or exploitation seems to accumulate. College athletes have often been exploited for their talents rather than receiving a profitable education. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a billion dollar organization that is responsible for regulating college athletes and athletic programs of universities across the United States (Should). When college athletes are recruited with the promise of “full rides,” they aren’t necessarily told that their scholarship won’t cover all their expenses. While some people believe that college athletes who receive athletic scholarships receive “full-ride” scholarships, the truth is that no athletic scholarship covers all of the costs of attending college, and that athletes in the majority of sports programs receive “partial” athletic scholarships (Athletic). For example, an athletic scholarship may not always cover the expenses of books, computer program fees, food, and housing. College athletes should be paid because they’re working a full-time job. If the average NCAA college football player in Division One spends over 40 hours a week on their game, then they are working the same amount as those in full-time employment do. These hours are distributed over training sessions, games, travel and other required sessions that student athletes must attend in order to remain on the team and keep their full scholarship (Top). The majority of these student athletes cannot qualify for work study or apply for off campus job because of their busy

What she also fails to mention about these things being covered is the student or athlete has to pay a significant amount for all of these. Some people also say that athletes shouldn’t be paid because they get scholarships, but scholarships also don’t cover the cost of everything. According to Veronica Majerol in the article, “Should college athletes be paid? two recent rulings may change the face of college sports,” “Still, the average full-scholarship athlete accumulates $3,200 in debt for each year they're in school, according to a recent study, because meal plans and other incidentals often aren't fully covered. Due to NCAA rules, athletes have not been allowed compensation for their participation in college athletics. This rule has caused a great divide and debate within the collegiate sport world, especially with the recent exponential growth of college athletics. For instance, college sports critics Val Ackerman and Larry Scott argue “that college is ultimately about getting a degree and getting ready for life long after their playing days are over” supporting their claim that college athletes should not be paid (Ackerman and Scott). Opposing that view is the idea that college athletics offer exactly those benefits and more, which would be maximized with payment. As of right now, college athletes are being compensated through scholarships that average…

Should college football players receive money for participating in a football game? Or when players receive a scholarship, payment enough? Craig Keolanui argues that if the players received payment, then fewer players would break the team or NCAA rules. Also he argues that they need compensation for the sacrifices they pay every day for the team. A lot of people would disagree with me when I say soldiers shouldn’t make more money than athletes, but i assure you I can turn them into believers. Lastly if the government started giving people a lot of money everybody will want to join.…

Over the past few years college athletics have gained tons of popularity and exposure all over America through television, the internet, and social media. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and participating colleges have earned increased revenues because of all the exposure that they have acquired. Even though the NCAA makes millions of dollars from sponsors, commercials, and tournaments, the players who play for the college teams receive no compensation whatsoever for all their hard work and dedication. Imagine being a dedicated worker working long hours far from home every single day, doing college work and studying for exams, bringing in millions of dollars to an employer and not getting paid at all for working hard. That is basically what all college athletes are going through when they work hard everyday in school, go to practice, win games on TV, and do not benefit from the profits that they helped earn for a revenue producing sport at a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) member institution.…

With coaches making upwards of $7 million dollars a year and television ratings for its game coverage skyrocketing, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has had its fair share of good times in the 21st century. The association has also had its worst times as well, “the NCAA has never been more vulnerable and on the defensive with regards to it policies and practices, especially its reliance on the age-old characterization of college athletes as “amateurs” who are first and foremost “student-athletes” and the limits its members have collectively imposed on the remuneration these players receive” (Sanderson 115). Plain and simple, the NCAA does not want to dish out money to players to compensate for their play time. The NCAA views the athlete only as that amateur and not as an employee of the association.…

Unfortunately what critics lack to admit is that normal student’s face these same issues, being involved in on campus clubs and other ordeals those normal students face no one truly has a lot of time to get a job. Athletes have built in connections that non-athletes do not have, so being on an athletic team is by far more advantageous then simply being a student. So why should student athletes be the only students benefitting monetarily for their hard work (College Athletes). No one is enslaving nor, “forcing these athlete-students to play football. Don't hand me the garbage about it being their only opportunity in life.…
