Why College Athletes Should Be Paid To Play

Imagine being a professional college athlete, investing multiple hours in athletics and academics. Countless hours are spent training to become the best of the best to compete against the best schools. Athletes experience a toll on their bodies not only physically, but mentally as well; the level of training and commitment to the sport is easily comparable to what a professional athlete experiences. However, questions are raised as to whether college athletes should be paid to play. Oftentimes, it is believed that it is the athletes who want to be paid, but in reality, it is their parents. Today, individuals view blacks as people who struggle with money and difficult standing on their own without any help. This leads to the opinion that blacks receive more support than whites because of their social and economic status. For example, from a study, it was found that Blacks are “more than two times as likely” to support the idea that athletes should be paid than Whites (Mondello, Piquero, Leeper, Gertz, & Bratton, 2013). As Whites are known to be more conservative, they strongly believe that the athletes are mainly for the education, therefore athletics and pay should be not the priority. Likewise, the public view the Blacks to receive additional “support [in] food stamps or welfare” (Mondello, et al., 2013). This leads to the idea that Blacks obtain support in academics and athletics fee because of their previous social struggles before entering university. These two sports create the most revenue because of the high scale tournaments such as March Madness and Football Bowl, as broadcasting and ticket sales are at its highest. In 2014, for the men’s basketball tournament, the broadcasting channel paid roughly “$800 million to the NCAA to televise” the tournament (Sanderson & Siegfried, 2015). This is a clear example on why student-athletes should be paid. It is because of the athletes that the tournament is occurring which is resulting in the association receiving millions of money from various channels. Along the same lines, student-athletes are employees like how other students are employees on campus. Student-athletes put in more hours than any other student does during the academic year, which only makes it correct for student-athletes to receive
