Should college athletes be paid? From ESPN personalities to universities and colleges across the country have been asking this question for many years. The answer to this is not exactly an easy yes or no. There are many factors that are being weighed in this decision. There are many simple answers but all based on personal opinions. The purpose of this essay is to inform the reader and allow them to form an opinion based on facts and not what their favorite ESPN analyst told them. But the answer is no a college student should not be paid to play college sports. Why shouldn’t a college student be paid? Well that is very simple answer college athletes are paid if you think about it. College classes are not free and college athletes do not have to pay these costs. Plus athletes are provided with room and board, plus a stipend through the year which allows the athletes to not have to worry about anything but their schooling and the sport in which they were given a scholarship for. The second most common argument is that college athletes spend an average of 43.3 hours a week practicing, playing, making media appearances for their school/team. As we look into the first argument of the amount of revenue brought to the school it cannot be forgotten that the college or university pays for everything for a college athlete. The athlete has his or her classes, housing, books, food, plus given a stipend for just spending money all of this is paid for by the university. The student athlete may bring a lot of revenue to their respective institution but that same institution spends a lot of the revenue on the student
