In The New Yorker article Ekow N. Yankan says, " If a high-school football prodigy reported that he Michigan not for its academic quality, tradition, or beautiful campus but because it outbid all other suitors, a connection to the university 's values would be lost" (Yankan). This shows that if colleges start paying students the students wont focus on what the colleges really have and what they are really for. They will focus on the money and this maybe will not work will every player because after college how will they get more money if they don’t get drafted, that’s where they really need to think and know what 's really good for them.

Imagine if you were a college athlete striving to provide entertainment for your student body and college fans, along with bringing in revenue for your school. Would you want to be paid for all the hard work, time, and dedication you put in, or are scholarships and grants enough to satisfy you? Whether or not college athletes should be paid is a huge controversy in today’s society and includes many pros and cons. One pro being that college athletics provide revenue for companies, but if we were to play devil’s advocate one could say that the student athletes already receive benefits through the school such as scholarship money, grants, and part time jobs. In Michael Wilbon’s article, “College Athletes Deserve to be Paid”, Michael goes on to state that College athletes deserve to be paid simply based on the fact that they are drawing so much money in for the college. He states the most logical way to pay these athletes is to give them a salary. Yes, the most logical alternative to athletic scholarships would be to eliminate scholarships for athletes and simply give them a yearly salary. This sounds like a very good plan, however, this would not benefit the institution whatsoever. If the college or university was $65,000 a year, the school would simply give this money out using their scholarship money under the current system.…

Some may agree, and most of them make a compelling point as to why they shouldn’t. Some of these points are because the athletes get paid already in scholarships and specific aids. As Rebecca Zissou states in the article, “Fair Play: Should College Athletes Get Paid?” "Many top players receive tuition, books, tutoring, housing, meals, clothing, elite coaching, medical care, travel expenses, and career counseling. " What she fails to mention is that most of these things that the athletes receive only cover a small portion of the actual whole cost of living and learning, and being sheltered, and traveling; the list could go on.…

Have you ever been watching a college sporting event on television and wondered how much the schools actually gain on having these sports? Well the answer to that question really is not that much. In 2010 the average net revenue of division one college football was 3.15 million, but 43 percent of the schools in division one had an average net revenue of 2.87 million in losses (Chua). This is because the schools that play in the bowl games end up spending more to play the football games then what they would make in the end. So after all the money is distributed over the college for paying the coaches and paying for equipment and other things in their sport programs there would be nothing left.…

With many athletes being in poverty the NCAA should provide them with extra money. Even though they receive scholarships as a form of pay they are not able to take full advantage of receiving the scholarships. Without the work and dedication of the Athletes the NCAA and colleges would not make as much money or as many students. The NCAA and universities are not the only ones who receive big money, the coaching staff does too with the help of the athletes.
