Across the United States, college athletics have gained huge popularity. That has resulted into increased revenues for the National Collegiate Association (NCAA). College athletics are also bringing in fans and popularity to the school. College athletics is a billion dollar industry. Yet with that large amount of money, no college athletes have been paid. Which has fueled the debate of whether college athletes should be paid.
In 1906, the NCAA was created to “Protect young people from the dangerous and exploitative athletic practices of the time” according to the NCAA website. Their education is based on their health, and how well they play. If a player gets hurt, or does not end up being what the team thought they could be, they can lose their education and be left with nothing. Mark Emmert, the president of the NCAA thoughts on paying athletes “If you’re going to come to us, you’re going to be a student”. They say that athletes should be happy with a free education. Dr. Steve Chen, a professor in Sport Management at Morehead University and writer of Should Student-Athletes Get Paid, feels that academics are the main purpose of college. He feels that college’s primary objective is to provide students with a quality education that prepares them for the real world. Paying athletes would take the student away from student-athlete and would defeat the purpose of college. Many complain for various reasons, as mentioned above, how allowing collegiate athletes to be paid will ruin the point of college. In reality, these athletes are just receiving what they deserve. The NCAA is a billion dollar industry that has more than enough money to pay athletes. The athletes sacrifice countless hours, work themselves to exhaustion, plus carry the burdens of a regular student all in the name of a game-without them there would be nothing.
