College athletics have gained extensive popularity among Americans over the past few decades. This has resulted in an increase in cash flow for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The enormous amount of money being made off of college sports has led to the question whether students should be getting paid for their performance. The NCAA, as a whole, makes $6 billion annually. But the players themselves don’t get a dime of the money. These athletes devote about 43.3 hours per week to their sport (Edelman). “If universities are willing to pay their coaching staff millions and sign million-dollar deals with sponsorships, it is only fair to pay their athletes at least a small sum of money for the hard work and time they put in

These college athletes play a significant role in the success of these activities but do not benefit from the profits. Some could view this as exploitation. Although college athletes are considered “amateurs”, they should profit from the money being made off of them just like any professional team. The main reason NCAA stated for the reason of no pay is because they want to maintain the amateur status and payment would take away the integrity of athletes. The NCAA makes its money from merchandise, ticket sales, television, and video games. Being a college athlete is a full time job. A typical full time employee works about 40 hours a week. Collegiate student athletes spend up to more than 40 hours a week practicing with little to no time to finish academic assignments. Professional teams have it easier because they don’t have to worry about things like having to study and keep their grades up.
