Birthright Citizenship has begun to become a major issue today. Whether either of the parents are American citizens, if the children are born in the United States they are automatically citizens. This has caused a lot of issues within the country. Is it truly fair that non-citizens are allowed to have children that would then have the right to everything America gives? It is believed that illegals having children having children within the US for birthright purposes is simply because America is a welfare country. It is stated in the 14th Amendment that “All persons born in the United States, and not subject to any foreign power, excluding Indians not taxed, are hereby declared to be citizens of the United States” (Will 601). It is said that when this was written there were no such thing as illegal immigrants because no one would have seen this issue coming. By no means am I stating that both parents should have to be born in America for their children to be citizens, but there should be guidelines in which America follows.
There should be a fine line as to which immigrants children are granted citizenship. I am a firm believer that everyone should be given a chance, but why should that happen when it is taking away from true US citizens. In some cases there are immigrants that have a family with natural born citizens. In that case, the immigrants/Americans child should be able to be a citizen when born, but only if the immigrant parent has been in the United States…
