The Calorie Control Council argues, “Over the fifteen year period, obesity has overtaken smoking. Smoking has decreased by 18.5 percent whereas the proportion of the population that was obese increased by 85 percent.” To elaborate, studies showed obesity has a higher mortality risk than smoking since 2008. Critics have a valid point about obesity overtaking smoking because it causes loss of years in life due to this condition. However, Calorie Control Council misses the point that smoking is the leading cause of annual deaths in America. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states “Smoking leads with more than 140,000 deaths annually.” Obesity comes after smoking for the biggest health problem in America.
