Whether they learn that they can’t win every time or that you need to practice at things to get better, children can take the skills from sports and transfer them to the classroom. In the article, “Get Off that Couch and Play!” it stated, “Students learn important life skills such as how to accept criticism, how to handle oneself under the pressure of competition, how to work hard toward a goal, how to win and lose graciously.” (Booker, paragraph 4). An example of these skills is me working toward one of my goals for school. My goal was to receive all “A’s,” which would be challenging. But because I knew what was needed to reach this goal, I completed it. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without sports. According to University of Missouri Health Care, “Sports require memorization, repetition and learning — skillsets that are directly relevant to classwork.” (“Benefits of Sports,” paragraph 2). These are some of the skills children will learn when they play sports. For instance, I had to memorize our basketball team’s inbound plays. I also learned that repetition is key for a great free throw routine. Supporters of competitive sports believe that they have a solution to this problem. They believe that participating in sports will help lower these numbers. The Article, “Benefits of Sports” said, “Clearly, sports will improve your fitness and weight goals.” (“Benefits of Sports,” paragraph, 4). According to Sarah Davis, “Participating in competitive youth sports burns calories and helps to prevent obesity. Additionally, many kids who are active in sports are motivated to eat healthier foods, such as fruits and vegetables.” (Davis, paragraph 3).
