Should Children Be Charged as Adults for a Major Crime? Crimes are rising every second of the day. In today's world, thousands of people are convicted of major crimes such as murder and rape. As the year’s progress more and more murders occur by adults and young children. Children from ages 5 to 13 who commit major crimes should be able to be charged as an adult. Allowing these children to get away with crimes such as murder gives them the idea that as long as they are under the age they have a free pass. When a major crime is committed by a child, they’re no less severe, and therefore they deserve an equally severe consequence. Letting anyone get away with a major crime does not give the victim the justice he/she deserves. …show more content…
A victim's family or close friends usually want one thing if their loved one has been victimized is that they're killer, abuser or whatever the case is to be fairly punished. When a murder is committed by a minor attorneys tend to avoid an adult conviction for the child since most juries may side with the defense that will argue they didn’t understand what they were doing. There are at least 2,500 children that have been rightfully punished for the crime they have committed. What about the rest of children who are not able to be punished for a crime they have clearly committed and knew exactly what they are doing? That 48% of children who have executed the same crime that has been on the same level of insanity as an adult felon and have received a lesser sentence than a child would or adult for the same crime, since they were found “unable "to understand the severe consequences they would have for their actions. Others like authors at “Column Five” may argue that “young criminals who are sentenced in adult prison are 5 times to be sexually abused” however, if children knew that they wouldn't be sentenced lightly and that they wouldn't always be protected by their age perhaps it would lessen the amount youth prosecutors have to give an adult sentencing to in an adult prison. Mahatma Gandhi once said “all crime is a kind of disease and should be treated as such”. When someone has a disease doctors don’t choose the least effected medicine that might have an impact. The same thing district attorney should do, look further into the case and give the criminal a punishment that will have an impact on his/her life

The article, “Juveniles Should Be Tried As Adults” by Mary Estudillo, brings up many strong arguments as to why juveniles should be tried as adults, but the opposing article, “Juveniles Should Not Be Tried As Adults” written by Hannah McCrea strongly claims they should not. Estudillo cites examples of cases in which juveniles committed first and second degree murder, and were thereafter tried as adults. She explains how juveniles should be tried as adults because they are criminals, and criminals need to held responsible for their actions. She also brings up how rehabilitation does little to sometimes nothing for the child, so when they are released, they commit another crime. Alternatively, McCrea authored “Juveniles Should Not Be Tried As Adults,” and states how adult prisons do more harm than good for juveniles.…

When it comes to the criminal justice system, there are many varying elements that contribute to the process through which accused offenders are counseled. As is expected, there are also numerous moral and ethical disputes that come with the territory, such as whether or not children, or 'juveniles', should be tried as adults in court for the violent crimes they commit. Some may say any child over the age of five should know the difference between right and wrong; for an individual to plan out a crime and act on it, the punishment should fit the offense, no matter the age. However, there is a thin line between vice and neurosis when it comes to juveniles. The incarceration of individuals under the age of sixteen at adult correctional facilities…

Children are usually seen as innocent, as they play around with others and are just balls of energy. Often seen as simply kids who have no experience in the outside world until they grow older. However, sometimes a child’s play can go wrong and can affect another’s life. When these incidents happen where a death is involved, it’s often easy for society to look at the offender as a murder who should be in prison for the rest of their life despite what age the offender may be. While juveniles committing heinous crimes should be punished, they should also be given the chance to rejoin society at an appropriate age; therefore juveniles who redeem themselves should be able to get released earlier and be able to put their life together.…

People have different opinions on whether children should be charged as adults for their crimes. Some people think that juveniles need a second chance to be rehabilitated and become better members of society. That isn’t the case at times, not every person who commits a crime can change for the better. There are always chances of recidivism. That does mean that there isn’t hope for other juveniles who commit crimes to be rehabilitated.…

The decision of juveniles being tried as adults in the world of criminal justice has usually been an object of controversy. Some agree that an adolescent who commits a serious crime like murder deserves to be penalized exactly like an adult; while others declare that a minor should not face the same punishment as an adult. However, no matter how severe or appalling a crime may be, juveniles should not be tried as adults; the reason being that everyone should be granted the chance to learn from their mistakes.
