Could Using Cell Phones in Class, Actually be Beneficial?

Are cell phones in class really a good thing? Can they be a beneficial tool to use in the classroom? Can they actually help the students grow in the classroom? Cell phones are becoming more and more involved in school every year. Cell phones have definitely grown in the last couple of decades. Information went from paper textbooks to online digital textbooks. The problem is, there is an enormous argument for whether cell phones should be allowed in school or not. Cell phones are said to be a distraction for students and we shouldn’t have the privilege of using them in school, but others think they are a tremendous tool to use in the classroom and therefore should be used in school.

By getting the privilege to use their cell phones in class, they can easily grab their phone and play an educational game to cool off from doing a worksheet. If kids get stressed after doing most of the worksheet, they can play 1 or 2 educational games to take a break momentarily and cool off. Stress can feel like a huge hammer banging on your head, resulting in an even bigger headache. As a student I get stressed sometimes if I have a lot of work to do; sometimes I just need a break. In her 2015 blog post, “40 Uses For Smartphones in School”, Andrea Leyden a writer and blogger for goconqr, argues that “There are literally hundreds of educational apps that can make learning more enjoyable and easier on the students.” Others might argue that children could finish 1 or 2 problems then play games the rest of the hour. However, teachers could set rules to have the children show him/her their worksheet to make sure they are not just slacking off and playing games when they still have work to do. So it stands to reason that cell phones are an exceptional tool to have in the classroom. This way, the kids could take a break and still get some learning time

Though I concede that cell phones can be a great tool for learning and communicating quickly over long distances. They can also give peace of mind to parents when their children need to walk from place to place. I still maintain that many kids do not use cell phones as a tool for learning and many do not know how to use their devices in moderation. For example, children with cell phones could miss social interactions because texting was more convenient or just easier. Another issue with children having cell phones is the ease of access to social media.…
