Should Cats Be Outlawed In The United States?

Improved Essays
In the United States, there are approximately 74-96 million owned cats in comparison to the 70-80 million owned dogs. Meaning that you are more likely to own a cat. I never understood this as a dog lover, because cats seem to just be a “lazy person’s dog.” Cats seem to lack all the good qualities of a dog such as: loyalty, obedience, playfulness, and so forth. Those that I know that own cats just seem to like them because they are easier to take care of, and that they require less attention than a dog. For this reason, I find it necessary to outlaw all cats and prohibit the smuggling of cats into the United States due to overcrowding of shelters and millions of feral cats, them promoting laziness, and frankly -- because they flat out suck. …show more content…
In the system of Checks and Balances, our government is made so that none of the three branches; executive, judicial, and legislative can have “more power” than the other. The problem with my bill is that federal judges don’t need to worry about re-election based on the unpopular stance of wanting to outlaw cats, and that the bill would inherently be deemed as very controversial, making it extremely difficult to be drafted. Overall, the bill won’t be passed because of it being a controversial bill, and that many tax dollars would have to be spent in capturing and getting rid of all the owned cats, and feral cats at that. Many people would disagree and it would never be passed because of

In the article “The Last Meow” published in The New Yorker in 2003 the author Burkhard Bilger states, “Americans now spend $19 billion a year on veterinary care for their pets, up from $11 billion just seven years ago. Add to that the cost of pet food and other supplies, and the number rises to $47 billion, nearly three times as much as the federal government spends on welfare grants.” Bilger claims, “clearly our love affair with animals has gotten out of control ( Part 8 para 49)”. There is no doubt that Americans spend a ridiculous amount of money on their beloved pets; money that could be spent improving their quality of their own life and the life of others. By defining the ridiculous and costly love affair Americans have developed with…

adapted to survive, … and … can’t be tamed.” Although some may argue that trap-neuter-return programs abandon feral cats, they provide an opportunity for the cat to continue living. For instance, one Jacksonville, Florida program both “decreased cat intakes by 25 percent and decreased ‘euthanasia’ by more than 75 percent” (Robinson). In addition, trap-neuter-return programs cost less than euthanasia. One statistic is that “San Jose, Calif. … spent just $72 per cat for its TNR program, versus $233 per cat to impound and ‘euthanize’ them” (Robinson).…

Should Pit Bulls be Legal Is your pet capable of murder?! Probably not, but in Illinois there was a man who owned a pit bull. He left it chained up in his backyard and never gave it much attention. When he did give it the attention he would only teach him games like tug-a-war and such. One afternoon his neighbour's kids were outside playing.…

In Western culture, very few, if any at all, cats are used in a utilitarian sense; we no longer need to keep them around to kill rodents and protect our food supplies. The modern Western feline has essentially no economic value whatsoever; the way we are using the word domestication has shifted from perpetuating the utilitarian idea of a symbiotic relationship between animal and human to a relationship where, in a utilitarian sense, nothing is gained. In Western society today, domesticated cats are bred with the sole purpose to “exaggerate, diminish, or shape a variety of other characteristics, such as temperament, body shape, fattiness, the possession of horns, muscling, the presence or absence of body hair, and fur and eye color” (Palmer…

According to the humane society (2016), 36.1 million households in the United States have a cat as a pet, with an average of 2.58 people per household, so thirty percent of Americans have a cat as a pet (“Pets By The Numbers”, 2016). If an animal shelter mistakes a pet cat for a stray cat or a feral cat, what should they do with them? Should they wait the five days and euthanize them, or should they give them a chance? Should they let the cat live, and if so what is the difference between a domestic cat and a feral cat? They are the same type of animal, so what causes a pet to be of more importance?…

The ordinary house cat is one of the most common pets in American households, besides dogs. Not only are cats fluffy and playful, they also provide people with companionship. According to the article Cats Domesticated Themselves, Ancient DNA Shows by Casey Smith, Smith provides evidence that cats have always been close companions to humans. By looking at various forms of DNA, researchers have discovered “… ancient Romanian cat remains… [including] Egyptian cat mummies, and modern African wildcat specimens” over the span of the last 9,000 years (Smith). Can you imagine life without having pets or not having a companion with you to make you feel better when you 're upset or sick? They simply drool at your feet whilst dogs and other animals become close to you. 19% of UK households own a cat, which is quite a large amount, and what surprises me most is how only 25% of UK households have a dog! I would’ve thought many more people would own a dog because they really are a mans best friend! You get to care a lot more for other animals instead of having a cat.…

Topic: Adopting and Rescuing Animals Specific Purpose: To persuade my effective speaking class the benefits of adopting a pet over buying one from a breeder or pet store. Central Idea: Adopting animals and rescuing is much more beneficial than buying an animal from a pet store because you won’t be unknowingly or knowingly supporting a puppy mill, you will be saving an animal’s life, and you will feel better overall in the end about rescuing your new pet rather than buying. INTRODUCTION Attention-Getter: According to Humane Society of the United States organization’s website I accessed on December 6, 2016, “Each year, 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized in the United States, simply because too many pets come into shelters and…

Should animal cruelty be illegal? Animal cruelty is also known as animal abuse or animal neglect, which is when someone hurts and animal or does not care for an animal responsibly. Animal cruelty has been apart of the society since the ancient ages. People don’t actually see the different parts of animal cruelty, they just see it as having pets, going hunting, using them for experiments, making them fight each other, and used for entertainment. According to the ASPCA, “150,000 American horses are slaughtered each year for human consumption.”…
