Should Cannabis Be Decriminalised

In a country whereby the most highly harmful drug available which is legal, the British government’s official scientific body on drug policy concluded that [legally regulated drugs] alcohol and tobacco are “significantly more harmful than marijuana.”, is regulated, sold and taxed is there for individuals to buy then surely a system can be placed whereby cannabis can be decriminalised and used in proportion for that countries individuals. Although the investigation was done in the UK, Irelands and the UK’s drinking and drug habits would be about the same, just on a bigger scale in the UK because of the size of population, however that should not deteriorate what the investigation is suggesting. Having systems in place whereby a set amount is allowed to have in possession without being charged for an offence will better the society as we have already seen with the countries that decriminalised cannabis.

What is needed from the government in order for Ireland to have cannabis decriminalised as well as taking steps to deal with the issue, is the need for perspective in terms of dealing with this as a social concern for the country rather than …show more content…
Having a system whereby individuals have a limit on the amount they are allowed to own, improving our drug support groups as well as having an environment whereby they are treated for instead of being locked up is the way forward for Ireland to progress as a country. Being regressive and not tackling the problem would increase the harm amongst the individuals that use the drug and especially the young people that are trending towards the use of cannabis. In conclusion I hope I have convincingly shown that cannabis should be decriminalised and not legalised for both medicinal and recreational
