Should Animals Be Kept in Captivity?

Nowadays, there are not many people in Hong Kong who have not visited a zoo in their lifetime. People are able to get relatively close to different types of animals though going to Ocean Park, Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens, Tuen Mun Reptile House, etc. When we are having fun in those places, it is also important to think of the feeling of those animals who are being displayed. Opponents argue that it is erroneous to remove wild animals from their habitat, that they ought to be left in natural surroundings but not used as tools for public entertainment (idebate.org, 2012). Proponents respond that zoos are beneficial both the animals and the public, that they protect species from endangered, and shape the animals as an educational tool to increase public awareness and understanding (idebate.org, 2012). Keeping animals in captivity helps to protect species from endangered but limited their freedom. In Hong Kong, the major function of zoos is to provide amusement for people. Nevertheless, it is hard to see how could it be the possible justification for keeping wild animals in captivity. ‘Indeed, couldn't most of the important educational objectives better be achieved by exhibiting empty cages with explanations of why they are empty?’ (Jamieson, 1985). No matter we are for or against keeping animals in captivity, never should we forget the final goal. It is sure that all animal-lovers have one common goal - ensuring the welfare of the
