It’s My Party and I’ll Pee Where I Want To One of the topics being debated in the news today is the legal establishment of transgender bathrooms. Should Americans be allowed to use the bathroom where they feel most comfortable? Is the sex or gender listed on a person’s birth certificate a life sentence or do we live in a more fluid and accepting society that is capable of seeing past genitalia to whom that person really considers themselves to be? A person no matter the sex, presence or absence of make-up, or style of dress has the right to use the restroom. It should not matter what restroom. Maybe they are. School is a time when children are confronted with many issues that will challenge their young minds. I believe that this very thing is the simplest definition of education and to avoid confusing situations is the same as avoiding the opportunity to learn. Let me introduce if you will the story of Coy Mathis. Coy was a six-year-old child with long blond hair who played with female classmates and wore dresses to school. All of Coy’s classmates identified with her as a girl. In first grade Coy was forced to begin using the boy’s bathroom because she had been born a boy. I can only imagine the hurtful feelings that occurred with all the children involved. How does the mind of a six-year-old child process the fact that their female friend is all of a sudden being forced to use the boy’s bathroom when she is a girl? The efforts of the adults who made this decision only created a more traumatic situation. It would have been a better option to promote education and awareness on the subject. To enlighten the children and in doing so remove the veil of confusion by providing an explanation about transgender people. Awareness, tolerance and eventually acceptance of transgender people should be the goal of all parents. These things will not happen if avoidance is the only option.
