Should Afterschool Programs Be Pointless

Improved Essays
I think that afterschool programs would be pointless. If students listen in class then they would not need an afterschool program. Schools last a long time anyway, but if schools had an afterschool program then school would be much longer than it already is. Most students would not even take afterschool programs seriously. It can also interfere with students extra-curricular activities. That is why I think that afterschool programs would be pointless. First of all, I think afterschool programs would be pointless because of too much school time. School usually last about eight hours. If schools had afterschool programs then that would be more school time. Students do not want more school if they do not need it. If students pay attention in class then they would not need afterschool programs. This is one reason I think that afterschool programs would be pointless. But, students do it anyway therefore, causing them to get bad grades. Afterschool programs are as wasteful as dirt. With school having many students but not very many teachers classes are skewed beyond belief. Students do not get to pick their courses but are randomly assigned. This means if a student is interested in let’s say hairdressing and she gets put in a sewing class she is stuck in that sewing class. So students that are qualified to take an AP course may not be able to be put in those classes because they are randomly assigned and that means some kids are destined to fail if they are not up to AP standards and are put in an AP course. In addition, if students do not have internet or a place to study they have only a half hour after school to work in the library.…

Should The Bar Be Risen RE:" Time to raise the bar in high schools," written by Jack O' Connell Raising the high school standards can increase the problem solving skills and communicating skills. This is a topic I can see as a positive change. Unless the standards are to high and could seem unfair. Having the standards raised for high school and accomplishing high standards student would seem more competitive for the real world. If the standards are raised to high the students would have a lot accomplish.…

The content analysis included two research questions which were aimed to gather information about the key outcomes in the afterschool programs that were funded by the RBC foundation and whether the key outcomes measure the success of the afterschool programs based on the programs goals. The methods used to perform this content analysis involved an end of the year evaluation report that included a question aiming to gather information about which academic, social, and recreational activities were provided to the participants, the outcomes of the activities and a proper measurement of the achievement of the participants. A table was then used for the responses of this question and the responses were then separated into categories, which included the benefit of the activity, the activity itself, the outcome and how the outcome was measured. A coding framework was then used to separate the content gathered into three categories of benefits of academic, social and recreational outcomes. This methodology was appropriate for this program in order to proper identify the key outcomes of activities that provided reliable accounts as to how and which elements of the afterschool programs are…

First, more school hours can overwhelm children. The school day stresses many kids with all the homework and work they have to do. In the article from Scope,by Tod Olson, ”A survey from the American Psychological Association found that during the school year, students stress levels spike. Nearly a third of respondents said they were “overwhelmed” by the pressure (Pg.31). This information from the article shows how kids can get stressed from hours of school so extending them would be an atrocious idea.…

Anaheim High School isn’t at its best anyone can notice the more time we need in classes for better grades. Other schools would notice this as well or have the same problem, Anaheim’s grades aren’t the best and or is the knowledge at Anaheim High School. The only thing seen is needing improvement on is the school hours and the reason why I mention this is because teachers know this is true. Students need time to learn even though there are those quick learners but there is also those that struggle. Within the story Marita's Bargain by Malcolm Gladwell a fictional genre it mentions “Higher test scores only come by taking time to study and understand the work” this is a fact that schools must take notice about, even if the schools are either…

Leon Botskein addresses a controversial topic in his essay, “Let Teenagers Try Adulthood,” where he discussed why high schools as we known it should be abolished. In his essay he introduces his chief issues with American high schools. He says, “the primary reason high school doesn’t work anymore, if it ever did, is that young people mature substantially earlier in the late 20th century that they did when the high school was invented,” (Botskein). In his essay he established his belief in what the chief issues that need to be addressed in order to improve American high schools.…

Five Years of Benefits When people think of a person who took a fifth year in high school they think of failure, miss credits and many similar problems, but actually no one really looks at the beneficial side of a fifth year. It can allow a student to become more aware of programs, life paths and career choices which is extremely important. Therefore, the high school program should extend to five years instead of four because it allows students to obtain more education and gain more life skills. People say that grade twelve is enough education for students, but actually in an extra year of school many things can be taught and learned. Firstly, an extra year of high school opens up more learning opportunities for students.…

For some time, schools have been debating whether they should get rid of sports to help students improve their education. Many studies have found that schools that provide after school athletics are shown to have a lower academic rate. Therefore, school sports should be cut off because they are a distraction from school work, cost a great deal of money, and cause fatigue. Many student athletes know that their extra-curricular sports may take away from their education.…

Have you ever been late to school because you slept in. Well I have done that because I did not go to bed at the right time. Mostly everyone has a time to be in bed, because of school in the morning and some kids don’t follow that rule which the students should. The students should follow that rule because they have school in the morning and they have to be there early. I believe that the time of school should stay the same because it would cost more money, you wouldn't have problems if you went to bed earlier, and it would disrupt after-school activities if we went later.…

Many have argued if Florida schools should switch to year-round school. Florida should not switch to year-round school because it will make attending after school activities difficult and would make it harder, on parents who have to work over the time that their children are off from school. Year-round school would allow students and teachers to have more stretched out breaks instead of one long summer, that may lead to summer slide. Changing to year-round school would make everything harder so Florida should stick with traditional and not switch to year-round. First of all, after school activities including sports, music and many more are a great way for students in the community to stay active and involved.…

The average teenager needs 8-10 hours of sleep each night to maintain a healthy lifestyle, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Their circadian rhythm causes them to want to fall asleep around 11:00 pm and need approximately 9 hours of sleep every night, which result in teenagers waking up later too. A good solution would be to have a later school-start time. However, problems that might have been overlooked in the past are now resurfacing. All of these situations suggest a later start time is not a viable solution.…

If kids could start school later they wouldn't be falling asleep during class. If school were to be able to start later in the day the people that do sports could do them during the morning before school. When kids are sleepy during school they can sometimes get an additude with their teachers and get bad grades. When kids get bad grades from sleep loss in one class they slowly start to fail their other classes as well. Lots of times the students aren't the ones causing the problem, sometimes it can be the teachers.…

In forty-six states across the country, schools have begun the use of the year-round schooling calendar(“Schools without Summer Break"). In the traditional school year, students attend classes for about nine months followed by a three month vacation. In an all year school, that summer vacation is broken up into numerous shorter breaks that occur throughout the year while still following the 180 day school calendar. Year-round school is necessary and should be used in education nationwide. Students in these types of schools are constantly being immersed in the classroom so they won’t experience summer learning loss by the time they return to school.…
