In today’s tough job market, it is imperative to have a Bachelor’s degree to be competitive. Student’s majoring in accounting are entering a high-demand field that can earn them a lucrative salary and professional full of opportunities. However, after graduating the newly minted Accountant must decide if they want to complete the requirements to sit and take the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam to earn their CPA license. Accounting graduates should take the extra courses to sit and take the CPA exam because it is worth it in terms of increased salary potential, a sought after credential by companies, and the respect of your peers.
In order to sit for the CPA exam the candidate must meet the education and professional requirements. The CPA candidate must apply to their State CPA board to obtain permission to sit for the CPA. According to Metrejean and Stocks (2008), those accounting graduates wanting to take the CPA exam must have 150 hours of college credits. Typically, a Bachelors degree is conferred after 120 hours of college credit, so those wanting to take the CPA exam either take extra accounting courses or pursue a Master’s degree in accounting to meet the 150-hour requirement. According to Fuller and Hargadon (2010), in order to sit for the CPA exam the applicant must have one year of professional work experience if they have a Master’s degree or two-years of professional experience if they have a Bachelor’s degree.
