From the many California laws, one particular abortion law is the cause of much controversy. This controversial California law states that a parent’s approval for an underaged girl to obtain an abortion is not mandatory (National Center for Youth Law). There are many who oppose this law but there are others who support it. Parental notification and approval should be mandatory for a minor to receive an abortion since the parent/guardian is legally responsible for the minor and the underaged girl’s health can be placed in great danger.

Like with all other medical procedures or medications, there could be unexpected complications and serious/negative effects to the patient. Patricia Lee June informs us in her report, Induced Abortion: Risks That May Impact Adolescents, Young Adults, and Their Children, “There are other inherent risks to surgical abortions such as uterine perforation, cervical lacerations, and hemorrhage, in addition to inherent risks of anesthesia.” Because these results are serious and dangerous, if something like this were to go wrong with the minor’s abortion, the parents would not be aware which would cause the minor much pain and suffering. If an abortion can leave physical and psychological scars on an adult, the scars this leaves on minors can be much more serious. For example, the adolescent could feel guilty after an abortion and due to the lack of aid needed to recover, she can fall into a depression or can suffer from post-traumatic stress. It occurs when a woman is unable to work through her emotional responses due to the trauma of an abortion.” If the minor were to suffer from such disorder, she might not ask for help from her parents or seek help at all, this would not allow the minor to heal and would force her to struggle on her own. Because there are many problems that can arise during or after an abortion, a minor’s parents should always be involved. Without them involved, there would be no one to keep an eye on the minor in case of a negative reaction, this lack of supervision could have devastating results to the underaged youth’s

Yet, on the negative side of things, minors may take advantage of this, knowing they have an “easy way out” if they become pregnant, therefore some minors may be less careful during intercourse, and not using contraceptive methods. I feel if a minor becomes pregnant, in some cases it would be more helpful if an authority figure knew and could be supportive, but all in all the minor would have the decision whether she wants an abortion or…

Women that undergo an abortion can develop physical and psychological health complications. Physical health complications can occur during the medical procedure causing immediate health risks. Psychological complications progress after the medical procedure is finished and tend to greatly impact women’s emotional stability over the course of their lives. Lastly, federal and state laws have been implemented to regulate and limit a woman’s access to obtaining an abortion. These legislations make it harder for women to get an abortion making them more responsible for preventing the possibility of becoming pregnant.…

Without notification and consent, underage girls could be having abortions without their parents even knowing, leaving the parents to “Imagine [their] daughter going through an abortion with no one by her side, her having to be alone through this hard decision in life, and [watching her become] mentally and emotionally miserable” (Pence). It is also good to have all parental consent laws due to the fact that adults are more mature to better handle the situation and “Minors need to have a second take on what they should do with their lives” (Pence). Another reason for parental consent is that it would make “The young woman feel that her parent(s) fully support whatever decision she makes,” leading her to a healthier…

Should Teens Be Allowed to Purchase Contraceptives Without Parental Consent? Three in ten teen American girls will get pregnant by the age of twenty which is approximately about 750,000 teen pregnancies every year, and one in four teens contract a sexually transmitted disease every year. With this being said there is a huge debate on whether teens should be allowed to purchase contraceptives without parental consent. Teens should be allowed to purchase these contraceptives due to the fact teens will continue to have sex with or without parental consent leading teens to put their health at risk, teens will turn to illegal options to receive them, and it helps people from low income families that can’t afford to go to a doctor to get them.…

A lot of woman who experience unintended pregnancy undergo abortions also. Hospitals around America stopped providing the choice for a woman to have an abortion.…
