“No woman can call herself free who does not control her own body,” as the famous Margaret Sanger once said. Since then, this quote has paved a path for women 's rights such as abortion. The topic of abortion has been an issue since the 19th century, beginning with Great Britain when they enacted antiabortion laws and the US slowly followed behind. However, in 1973, the Roe v. Wade case ignited a fire and the decision for a woman to have the choice to terminate her pregnancy was made legal. Abortion has since been argued as to whether it should remain legal as it is or become completely outlawed. Subsequently today, 50% of US citizens are pro-choice. The termination methods in the past were unorthodox and dangerous and almost always ended up resulting in an infection. After 1973 when abortions became legalized, the number of abortions skyrocketed, as well as the safety of the implemented procedures. Today, modern medicine has made abortions to where they are painless for both parties. In other words, the fetus is removed safely without it feeling anything; meaning that the fetuses are either put to sleep or are already deceased. In addition to safe removal, the fetus can be used to fund other projects such as stem cell research (AbortionProCon.org Web.; Denes; Roleff).
The pros of abortions can have benefits. For example, they can help further advance scientific discovery and they can give a woman a second chance to live her life. The most popular research being conducted with fetuses is stem cell research. Stem cells are the undifferentiated cells that have the incredible potential to develop into several kinds of cells in the body, such as a red blood cell, brain cell, or even muscle tissue. They are mostly used in aiding tissue or cell repair, or even replication of certain cells to help with growth (Stem Cell Basics. …show more content…
Planned Parenthood is a women 's health clinic and they provide doctor 's appointments, contraceptives, and even abortions sometimes. One rumor that needs to be proven is that Planned Parenthood spends most of it 's funding on abortions. However, this is wrong because last year only 3% of the funding went towards abortions. Whereas, 42% funding went to providing teenagers with STI/STD treatments and 34% on contraceptives (In-Clinic Abortion Procedures. Web).
The next rumor that needs to be conquered is about Planned Parenthood providing fetus parts to stem cell research. This is a myth because any abortions performed at their facilities ask for their consent to stem cell research. Furthermore, donating just body parts is wrong morally at their company and during their abortion procedures, Planned Parenthood makes sure the fetuses remain safe and uninterrupted (In-Clinic Abortion Procedures. Web).
To conclude, abortion has done more good in the world than most people believe. Not to mention that abortion should be a woman 's right because we deserve the choice to choose what we do to our bodies. Men have every right they want, even the ones that dictate the choices of their bodies. Abortion honestly, only affects the woman and the fetus. All of the other surrounding opinions do not
