Should Abortion Be Restricted

Improved Essays
There are many laws now restricting access to abortions which may outlaw abortions in the future. The movement to outlaw abortions is getting stronger and congressmen have taken measures to make abortions harder to receive. Back in the 1970s abortion had been illegal because of religious views about babies, and now those same views are appearing again. The two sides of the argument fight for either the women’s right or the right of the fetus. The people fighting for abortion are fighting to give women a choice so that in the future they will be able to decide instead of having congressmen decide. According to polls “...53% of Americans legal access to abortions should not be restricted”(Holmes). This proves that the majority still believes …show more content…
Through the years the access to abortions has been greatly restricted. In the United States as abortion was made legal, greater access to abortions was provided and, “...the number of deaths per 100,000 abortions dropped from 4.1 in 1973 to .6 in 1997”(Torr 54). The number has decreased greatly due to a greater access to abortions and women can be prevented from hurting themselves. As a woman goes through her pregnancy, the cost of an abortion increases and the availability decreases(Holmes). That causes women to have to work many jobs and borrow money while carrying a child just to pay for an abortion. Women are put at the risk of injuring themselves and, had there been more access to abortions, women would not be put at that risk. In addition to working, women also have to travel for miles upon miles to reach an abortion provider. Young teens who are scared to having a child travel using buses and other unconventional transportations to receive abortions(Holmes). By not looking down upon those who have abortions, teens would not have to use travel using these methods and would be safer. A greater access to abortions should also be provided because hospitals that are against abortions are now able to withhold abortion procedures even in life or death situations with a new bill being drafted(“The Right to Choose”). Denying life or death emergency abortions is just another restrictive measure on abortions for …show more content…
There are many cases where an abortion is not wanted, but needed for the sake of the women or the child she has growing inside of her. In many states now, abortion is banned after the 20th week. However, sometimes young teens do not find out about their pregnancies until the 20th week, then they are left with no options(Holmes). Some of these young teens are not capable of raising a child and having a child at that point will only make the child and the mother suffer. In the circumstance where a girl is not capable of raising a child, an abortion is necessary. Sadly, women who have been raped have had to deal with the repercussions of the incident and for some women they have also had to deal with raising the child of the rape. The women who have survived a case of rape deserve to have a right to an abortion, but many times they have been turned away only because they came to an abortion provider after the 20th week(Steinberg). These women are forced to go through a pregnancy that reminds them of the pain they had to suffer. In the case of a raped woman who is emotionally unstable, she should not have to have the child. There are also some cases in which an abortion is done to protect the mother from death or other injuries. If a fetus develops wrong, it could harm the women and that is what happened in the case of Mary O’Donnell. Mary O’Donnell was having a healthy pregnancy until the 20th week where the child’s

Since 1760 BC, abortions have been sought-out internationally. There are a variety of reasons for them: because sexually abused women do not desire for guardianship of the child, females do not want their body to be unfit because of pregnancy, or it was a careless mistake that could have been prevented with birth control or any other prevention method. Many women have nonessential abortions. One quintessential example of this is in China; they kill fetuses if the sonogram proves the unborn child to be female. Abortions should be illegal because it is unjust and purposeless slaughter to the unborn human being.…

In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court had decided to legalize abortions; since then, there have been more than 58 million abortions performed in the United States. According to Snyder in his article, “every single day, more than 3,000 American babies are killed by abortion.” Why is it that the 9/11 tragedy, which killed almost 3000 people, is still a huge issue up until today, but when it comes to the issue of abortion, almost everyone is taking it for granted? People might think that the unborn babies feel no pain, but believe it or not, surgeon Robert P. N. Shearin claims that they can experience pain as early as 8 weeks old! The issue of abortion has always been one of the most controversial political issues in the United States.…

Judith Thomson, in “A Defense of Abortion”, argues her thoughts towards abortion, by using forms of analogies and acknowledges the right to life a fetus has, but also argues that the unborn baby’s right to life does not over ride the pregnant women’s right to make choices and have control over her body. There will be analogy examples in which there are different stated scenarios of a pregnant woman where you will find yourself comparing the scene to an analogy. In order, to justify whether an abortion can be performed or not under certain exceptions varying on the conditions. Thompson’s arguments about abortion deal with the status of being a person of the fetus and, in addition, those who oppose towards abortion spend most of their time trying…

Tom Anderson says, “Women should have the right to safe and legal abortions because it ensures them full responsibility and free participation in society.” Agreeing with Anderson, M. Brian Wilson disagreed and said, “Abortions should be outlawed because they are taking the lives of unborn children,” in addition to agreeing with him Lynn-nore Chittom and Heather Newton they are trying to get the supreme court to overturn the Roe v. Wade case. In a way I agree with both sides for different reasons because they both have their pros and cons. If abortion remains legal I think more and more women will become pregnant and feel a since of not having to be responsible.…
