In the 14th amendment, it states: “No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property…” (Source 3). The amendment protects people, including the unborn, as long as the mother resides in U.S. territory. It allows embryos that people are simply choosing to abort have the right of living a full life since every citizen has an equal opportunity in this country. This barbaric act goes against the 14th amendment because according to Dr. Matthews-Roth of Harvard Medical School and basic science, individual human life begins at the start of conception (Source 2). Keeping abortion legal in the states contradicts the whole purpose of the 14th amendment by allowing the mother to deprive its young of a prosperous life. Scholars quarrel that abortion should be kept legal since a zygote and embryo are quite similar to regular somatic body cells (skin cells) because of the fact that it is living and possess full genetic code, however they are not considered to be real human organisms which makes both a zygote and embryo not an actual human being as well (Source 2).
