Should Abortion Be Legal In The United States?

Improved Essays
Abortion. It’s a topic most people have strong opinions about and, despite being legal in this country, it remains both controversial and stigmatising. But why does abortion evoke such strong reactions in us? It is legal, safe, and sometimes even a lifesaving medical procedure. Wouldn’t it be sensible simply to let those who need abortions have them, and focus on our own problems instead? After all, the fact that abortion is legal puts you under no obligation to have one yourself. Unfortunately, though, it’s not that simple in many people’s minds.
A difficulty I have with those who oppose abortion is that they don’t seem to have considered the situation in countries where, often on religious grounds, abortion was, or still is, against the law.

Abortion is stigmatized, but so are teenage mothers. Abortion is not something women undertake lightly - it is a stressful process, particularly in many US states, where a woman is legally required to attend a Crisis Pregnancy Centre before she can go to an abortion clinic. At CPCs the staff are often trained to talk the woman out of an abortion, to tell her abortion is a sin - she will go to Hell. There are more than twice as many CPCs in America as there are abortion clinics, which shows that it’s not just a few people that consider it acceptable to emotionally manipulate unhappy pregnant women, but a widespread belief. In fact, even if the woman does manage to get to an abortion clinic, the guilt-tripping doesn’t stop there. A crowd of protestors stands outside yelling abuse or even throwing things at her as enters. And some abortion doctors will even force the woman to look at the aborted foetus to cause her more guilt.
Abortion is embarked upon out of need, not a casual impulse. There are many solid reasons why abortions are necessary – poverty, rape and medical complications being just a few. In America between 2000 and 2009, 67% of people turned away from abortion clinics were below the poverty line, and simply could not afford to support a new child.
It’s clear from the lives it has saved that abortion is a necessary medical procedure, and one that should be legalised and practiced safely around the world. The stigma surrounding abortion must be eradicated, or else social pressure will force more and more young girls into a life that they never asked for – or even no life at

Since 1760 BC, abortions have been sought-out internationally. There are a variety of reasons for them: because sexually abused women do not desire for guardianship of the child, females do not want their body to be unfit because of pregnancy, or it was a careless mistake that could have been prevented with birth control or any other prevention method. Many women have nonessential abortions. One quintessential example of this is in China; they kill fetuses if the sonogram proves the unborn child to be female. Abortions should be illegal because it is unjust and purposeless slaughter to the unborn human being.…

Voluntary abortion is described as the removal of an embryo or fetus from the uterus by surgical or medical means in order to end a pregnancy. In 1965 the Supreme Court’s ruling in Griswold vs. Connecticut established a right of privacy for the use of birth control and in 1973 Roe vs. Wade legalized abortion under the 14th Amendment’s right to privacy provision (ProQuest). The laws restricting the time of abortion are different among the states, but many of them are still referencing the Roe vs. Wade decision based on information collected over forty years ago, but in that time so much information has been discovered about gestational development, which is why I believe the laws should be revised. Women opt to have abortions for a wide variety…

However, not everybody is in agreement with the idea of abortion, making it a very controversial topic today. Some people think it goes against their religious beliefs, while others believe the procedure is morally wrong no matter what religion they practice. To ensure that Americans are both healthy and in unison with the law, abortion should become illegalized in the United States.…
