Shorter Summer Break Essay

Do you think there should be year-round schooling? Educators believe that by students having such a long summer they forget most of what they learn when they come back to school. There is discussion on whether students should have a shorter summer and long breaks during the school year so students are more likely to remember what they learned. Educators believe that a shorter summer breaks will improve students abilities to remember what they learned during the school year. This is why I believe they are right. I never put too much thought into what these educators thought until today or even thought about this. I agree with the educators that we should have a shorter summer and longer breaks because I believe they are right. Every time I …show more content…
There is no doubt in my mind that by having more research done about summer breaks students would probably want a change. There would be so many benefits of having shorter summer vacations students would remember things they learned easier, students might find many of their own benefits to this and so many more. I consider having my own school look into this. I believe that by having a shorter summer break students would remember what they learned during the school year and grades would improve if it was really worth it to the student. I have seen students who do so well in school come back after summer break and not fully understand what they used to.
These are my reasons for believing we should have shorter summer vacations. Not every student would put as much thought into this as I have and not every student would agree with my reasons. I personally believe that students who care about their education and want to do in school would probably agree with the educators and myself. More schools should look into what educators have said because they study this stuff and know what they are talking about. Whether schools change their summer vacations to shorter ones is up to them they do teach students and know what is best for their

There are few traditions as weaved into the fabric of American youth as much as summer vacation. The origin of the 3-month leave of school goes back to the 1800s. Originally, it was based on the Agrarian calendar when children were needed as farm hands during harvest seasons. It is obvious that we live in a different era than the 1800s, most people see summer as a time to unravel from the school year and enjoy a little bit of leisure, but today this idea is fading. This generation is unique to those before it, because of the forces of globalization and technology academic competition is increasing at rates never before seen.…

These topics are very controversial. They are controversial because people are saying that Year-Round school prevents summer learning loss, but others are say no it doesn’t and that regular 9 month school learns just as much as Year-Round school does (“Research Spotlight on Year-Round School”). Although a lot of people say that Year-Round school would help kids achieve their academic achievements, it is not the best solution to put your kids in Year-Round school because, there is no improvement in test scores, you would have less time with your kids, and it would be hard for your kids to keep a job.…

In a year-round school, it may be hard to maintain a job or travel with family in the one month of summer that the school gives students as their summer break. Laura Kelsey, author of “Should You Give Up Summer Vacation” claims, “year-round schools have roughly the same number of vacation days as traditional school calendars” (Kelsey 28). The traditional school calendar gives students 3 months of summer vacation, allowing students and teachers a much needed break. Some would argue that those summer months are the downfall to losing some of the material taught in the previous year of school. However, Kelsey also states, “Learning doesn’t have to stop for kids on long summer breaks.…

Would year-round school or would normal school be more beneficial for students? Some people believe that year-round school is better and are thinking about changing their school schedule to year-round. The education system should change schools to a full year schedule because students get the same amount of time off, students wouldn’t forget information as easily, and students would have a mind of clarity. If schools switched to year-round school, students wouldn’t forget information as easily.…

With more and more people switching to year round schools, more and more families are struggling to keep summer vacations and traditions alive. At the beginning of summer many families are getting ready for vacations, camping, and more, but if there is year round schools, then they will have to put off family traditions and vacations they have been doing for years or have been looking forward to for a while, so they have to get rid of all that just for year round schooling, which just started. Also, what if the parents already paid for that trip? That wouldn't be fair for them to pay good money on a trip that the whole family wanted to go on, just for year round school. Now if they want to go on a trip it has to be planned around the school's…

It has been proved time and time again, that students are happier when they get the opportunity of having a summer break. Without a summer break students don't perform the best of their ability. The school calendar should not run year-round because students perform better, and extra costs are avoided, however students would have more learning opportunities. All year long I look forward to summer. It's a time to be with friends, have no homework, and be carefree.…

Instead of a ten-week summer vacation, in which information is difficult to retain, we would instead have a four to six-week vacation period, creating frequent and smooth rolling breaks throughout the year. Lessening the need for longer review periods within the beginning of the school year. Allowing for a more regularized, stress reducing break system for not only for student, but for staff as well (Yeager, "Year-Round Education Program Guide."). Stress can often put a damper on our productivity and have detrimental health effects if not…

Another study states “students requiring academic support don't have to wait to go to summer school to get help. Instead, they can attend remedial classes early in the year to catch and fix problems quicker.”(pbs.org,2001). Without the long summer break, kids need less time to catch up and relearn so they can learn more and the entire school year. All in all year-round school improves student learning without burnout.…

As stated in the previous paragraph, there is proof that students lose valuable academic skills during a traditional summer break. This results in an average of four to six weeks at the beginning of a new school year in a traditional schedule being spent reviewing the previous school years material. When in the year round program the short breaks allow for students to retain their academic skills, resulting in less time reviewing and more time spent learning new material. In fact this increase time spent learning new material showed that year round schools had a 2.79 higher math gain and 1.61 higher reading gain over traditional schools. This is critical because first off many students quickly bore while learning old stuff and this may be connected to the 3% higher dropout rate in traditional schedule schools then year round and also less time spent reviewing may play into the higher attendance rates in year round…

Most students and parents disagree with this idea, and it comes off as a negative idea. In reality, this is not the case students who attend year round schooling actually have more time for this. They receive all kinds of breaks throughout the year that they could spend time with their friends or family and go on a family vacation at any time throughout the year not just in the summer. Little do we know year-round schooling has many more advantages than disadvantages, actually a lot of good things can come out of this. When schools had just begun, summers were necessary because children needed to help their families by working on the farm, and helping around the house.…

No one wants to give up their summer break for anything, especially school. Children enjoy their summer, it is the time they can do whatever with no interruption, like run outside all day, swim, or hang out with friends. Many teenagers have summer responsibilities, bailing hay, for example, is an all-day activity and is easier to start in the morning so it is not too hot and teenagers cannot bail hay for their parents or some old man who needs help if they have to be at school. With no teenagers making hay, for old men who need help, who is going to do it? Summer is also a time for families to visit other family members out of state or go on family vacations together, they cannot go on vacation with school taking up that time.…
