Is Obesity the main factor for a shorter life span in The American Society? Living in a world where many people are dealing with some sort of disorder could be the result of an unhealthy population which could be the cause of a short life expectancy. Many Scholars believe that obesity is the main cause for a shorter life expectancy but others believe that obesity is only one small factor among a large group of causes. One may argue obesity leads to heart diseases, which is a leading cause of death in America, while others point to pollution, chemical toxins, stress, anxiety, smoking and drinking to name a few. In order to research such topic scholars have used the body mass index (BMI) method to determine such results of obesity. BMI is the measure of the body fat based on the current weight and height of an individual. According to a study conducted by the University of Oxford, if a person has a BMI of 30 to 35, then they are moderately obese; if they have a BMI of 40 to 50, they are severely obese. BMI is used for assessing the extent to which fatty tissue causes health disorders. They also stated that obesity only increases the death rate for cancer but mainly kills people by increasing heart diseases and strokes. They found that one in three heart attack or stroke deaths and one in 12 cancer deaths in the US are due to being overweight or obese. (University of Oxford, 2009) An obese person has an excessive amount of fat in their body causing the body to function improperly. A person with this issue may suffer from high cholesterol, blood pressure and or diabetes among other complications which only hinders a person from living a healthier or more active
