Shortage In The Mayan Civilization

The world is full of people, too many some would say. With the world’s population currently at seven billion it is not hard to see that the population is surging. The number of people in an area must not exceed its carrying composite. With India being the second most populated country in the world, some say it has done just that. Over population is a problem that many people over look, now is the time to stop putting this problem to the side and face it head on before it is too late. The consequences of exceeding an areas carrying capacity has been demonstrated to those that live on this planet time and time again. In 200 CE the Classic Mayan civilization dominated the Yucatan region that is present day southeastern Mexico. However around 900 CE this great Mayan civilization suddenly dwindled in number. Many scientist believe this drop in population occurred due the population exceeding its carrying capacity. There then became food shortages and people became mal nourished and more susceptible to disease. This civilization is a prime example of what can happen when you exceed your areas carrying capacity. The issue some say is not the number of occupants but the amount each occupant consumes. If people could learn to only use what is necessary to sustain themselves then the number of occupants would not be a factor in determining if one area really is over populated. Currently thanks in part to the Green Revolution global food production is multiplying much faster than population growth. Our ability to manufacture and transport foods has made it possible for the carrying capacity to greatly increase.
