One of the recent trends in the hospitality industry is the accommodations being offered
by individual homeowners for transient guests. These homeowners rent out one of the rooms in
their houses for one, two or more nights to people looking for a more home style visit, as
opposed to a hotel. These guests often get a better price than they normally would with a hotel.

Not everyone wants to stay in a
gleaming chrome and brass shining building. Many are looking for a more at home less formal
stay while traveling. These travelers want a local feel to the city and their hosts can give local
advice and knowledge. It is a less touristy type of visit than staying in a hotel.
Commonwealth Properties is one company that has decided to compete by opening a 10
unit boutique hotel in a neighborhood in St. Paul. Noting there are eight properties listed on
AirBnb within a few blocks of this new hotel. The company purchased a mansion in the

Unlicensed hospitality sites
pose a hazard to guests staying there because they have not been inspected to be code compliant
for people to stay in. They also create an unfair advantage to legal operations that pay taxes are
licensed and code compliant.
The internet changed the way many people do business and it has changed the hospitality
industry. The AirBnb phase is just one area the internet has changed. It is doubtful that the
AirBnb concept is going to go anywhere soon. The hospitality industry needs to not only prompt
local governments to reign these illegal operations in to become code compliant, pay taxes and
obtain proper licensing. The hospitality industry should analyze this segment of the industry and
learn to profit from it.
