A short term effect of heroin is the rush or high you get after the heroin has entered your body. Depending on which method you use when handling heroin, will determine the type of effects you experience and how fast. Injecting heroin rather than smoking or snorting it will make the rush come much faster but it only lasts for a short amount of time. Another effect is reduced pain because for the time that the person is high, it is a feeling of euphoria for the user so the pain they had has disappeared, but only until the high is over. To justify, Eric Patterson states, “The pleasurable feelings related to the "rush" will only be felt for a few minutes with more lasting feelings of sedation persisting for a few hours afterward” (Drug Abuse). Heroin can also slow down a person’s mental function because it can cause one to become drowsy after their euphoric high. The alertness level of a person becomes very low which can lead to the user hurting themselves in various ways such as falling, since they’re too out of it to be aware as to what is going on around them. A slowed heartbeat can also occur. Even though short term effects don’t last long they are still affecting you in some way and a short term effect can lead to a long term
