Short Term Casework Essay

After the study by Reid and Shyne, Task Centred social work practise began to develop as this demonstrated the effectiveness of short-term casework. However it may be criticised for not focusing on long-term individual or social problems. In the study carried out by Reid and Shyne they identified that short-term treatment was more effective compared to long-term treatment. However a concern for this method is that it could be seen as inappropriate to some service users as they may not be seeking help to reach a goal but they may be looking for emotional support. This is a step-by-step process, beginning with exploring and identifying the problem and it is key that the service user expresses a want to working and solving the problem, which is why this may be a problem if they find difficulties linking problems and goals meaning that the social worker should not be worker so direct with the service user. However if a problem is identifies then the next step is to defined a goal which would remove or diminish the problem which would then lead onto implementing and achieving tasks both for the social worker and the service user to help them move forward towards reaching the goal, in an empowering way where they enter into a partnership both equally participating with the process, however this could cause difficulties if the service user is reluctant to working with the social worker together. Another problem with this is the fact that they both hold vastly dissimilar views of a problem. The final stage of this method is evaluating, together they will see whether the desired goal has been reached and if the initial problem has been
