Short Term 12 Movie Review

It’s rare to find a film that makes you sit in awe ten minutes after it’s over, but that’s the state you would’ve found me in after “Short Term 12” had ended. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a drama film that I, and many others I’m sure, could relate to. It covered real-life situations and lessons that viewers could, not only understand, but also learn from and take away meaningful guidance. I definitely turned off Netflix with a feeling of warmth and content. Overall, I found the film to be realistic, relatable, and so enjoyable to watch. “Short Term 12” stars Brie Larson, a supervisor of a group home for troubled, at-risk teenagers, and portrays her experiences with the kids during a time in which she’s facing her own, personal issues. What I really enjoyed was the simple cinematography. There wasn’t a need to include a ton of side effects or dramatic music; it was just pristine and straightforward. The message that was trying to be put forth was also very apparent and speaks to a lot of people. The movie encourages people to be open and to let people in to help you when needed. The language used wasn’t difficult to understand, with riddles or extreme metaphors that you need to look up after the film’s over. I definitely felt like she’s had experience working in these group homes before, because the acting was so raw and real. The title, Short Term 12, is the name of the facility where Larson works in the film. A scene that really stuck out to me was when Larson stands up to her boss over the case of one of the young girls. It really signified how dedicated she was to the job and how much she truly cared for everyone. I found the film to be a solid 10/10.
