The South's attempts for expansion, justified by the economic need for more land and therefore increased utilization of the growing slave population, appears to have a deeper motivation, the need for the vindication of Southern life. David Herbert Donald, in “Why the War Came: The Sectional Struggle over Slavery in the Territories,” provides a counter view to the South's claims it needed expansion to monetarily survive stating, “there was no special reason why –- apart from the generally expansive temper of all Americans --- for the economic reasons it had to be extended into additional territory.” Why then did the South push so hard to “expand or die”? The South strikes back with calls for expansion due to the belief “they were daily threatened…

In “What They Fought For” James McPherson discusses why the soldiers of 1861-1865 joined the war and if they knew just exactly what they were fighting for. In topical order, McPherson reveals the intense thoughts and feelings of soldiers in just a few of the 25,000 letters and diaries he read from soldiers that wrote to family members (13). The organization of the book is more effective because it goes into detail about a main point that the author tries to make. This book uncovers the motives of why some of the men were fighting, their confusions and fears, and their fierce sense of duty in fighting for their country. The men of the South expressed their reasons for fighting in letters to loved ones telling them how much they missed them…

American Guerrilla by Mike Guardia details the story of Russell W. Volckmann and his heroic efforts fighting the Japanese in the Philippines during World War II (WWII). Mike Guardia claims Russell W. Volckmann is the “True Father of Special Forces” and provides a compelling argument for this position. In his book, he describes how Volckmann evaded capture by the Japanese in Bataan, escaped to the mountains of North Luzon, organized a guerrilla force of over 22,000 fighters, and waged a successful guerrilla campaign from 1942 to 1945. Following WWII, Volckmann authored the US Army’s first two field manuals regarding guerrilla warfare and was instrumental in establishing the Special Forces Regiment, as we know it today.…

1898 marked a unique year in U.S. history and more importantly in political affairs. It was during this year that the United States hesitantly entered the Spanish-American War. It took the dramatization of a sunken ship along with the romanticism of the Cuban people to convince Americans that the United States should involve itself in what was known as the Splendid Little War. Fast forward to 1941 and a vast shift in political ideals are evident. In his “Four Freedoms” speech given on January 6th, President Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “… the future and safety of our country and of our democracy are overwhelmingly involved in events far beyond our borders,” (Roosevelt, 2) thus culminating an era in U.S. history as it was known.…
