The story is set in the Chicago of the eighties and follows the life story of the narrator, a young Latina girl, Esperanza. Based on her description the family’s reality is unpredictable because of the countless moves they encounter, but the parents are hopeful in keeping their promise to provide a home of their own for the kids. After they leave the house on Loomis Street in a haste, they finally inquire their new home on Mango Street, nonetheless Esperanza adds “But even so, it’s not the house we’d thought we’d get. We had to leave the flat on Loomis quick. The water pipes broke and the landlord wouldn’t fix them because the house was tool old. We had to leave fast. We were using the washroom next door and carrying water over in empty milk
