Short Summary Of Gone By Elie Wiesel

Ishmael and his friends are captured by a group of soldiers and taken to Yele which is a village employed by the military. During their stay, they are put to work cutting vegetables, carrying water, and washing dishes. The village seems like a safe place during this war, but it is home to many orphans. Ishmael believes that there is nothing to fear during the days in this village some children play soccer, marbles and parents take care of their children, But Ishmael suffers migraines and nightmares and doesn’t interact in the village with other boys. The village of Yele is being attacked by rebels and their military are falling like flies. They tell young boys (including Ishmael) and older men that they must either join their forces and fight or leave the village, Ishmael and his friends feel that they have no choice. If they were to leave the village the boys would be in more danger if they were to stay. The boys are given guns and move to the camp where the soldiers are. There are many boys, some even seven to sixteen. They are given new shoes and clothing. Ishmael's old clothes are burned with the cassette tapes of his rap music inside the pocket of his pants. Ishmael and his friends play a soccer game and swim and enjoy themselves. They are given guns and live ammunition for the first time and march off to the forest to fight. During this fight, Musa and Josiah are shot and Ishmael watches them die. This angers him which makes him less afraid to use the gun, he wasn’t afraid of the dead bodies he hated them. When they return Ishmael miraculously was able to fall asleep but was awoken during his nightmare causing him to shoot the gun in his tent. The corporal and lieutenant enter the tent splash water onto his face and is given more white pills. He is able to fight in more battles because of those
