In paragraph 18, Debord states that “mere images are transformed into real beings”. Upon reading this it is phenomenal to think that once the dominant class places out an imaginary image into the real world, people will naturally be inclined to follow it and recreate it in order to feel more whole. In a sense, when the dominant class writes the characters in these images, they can easily control the actions produced in the world without explicit instruction. This can be seen in mass marketing when they create the image of what is right, perfect, and universally accepted. They tell us that if you are blond with blue eyes and a fit body and a large bank account, your peers will adore you. So, one tries to fit the image fed to us by making these our goals. Debord continues on to remark in paragraph 28 that the system “strives to reinforce the isolation of the lonely crowd”. By isolating the crowd, the spectacle deprives the public of the ability to unify and collaborate on shared and true opinions. When people are isolated it becomes easier for the mass media to feed images and have each individual accept it because there is an absence of collaborative effort to challenge it. With today’s current technology it is easier than ever for everyone to be isolated with their phones and receive these images. It deprives him or her of their ability to consider what has been consumed. Thus, when we speak with the crowd, we are not giving in our “own” opinion but rather one that has been subconsciously fed to us. The modern world can thus appear as a room full of mirrors because the same idea from the dominant is bouncing back without additional unique thought.
