Short Story: Why The Roos Wins

A defensively perfect start to the season in torrid conditions has Wyong coach Rip Taylor impressed.

The wind was blowing and the track was wet, but the Roos still managed to pile on the tries without conceding a point, downing the Wests Tigers 42-0 at Morry Breen Oval.

Taylor admits, however, that the lob-sided result came down to his side playing for the conditions better than their opposition.

“We probably had a little bit of luck, we ran into a very, very strong southerly wind in our first half,” Taylor says to NSWRL.com.au.

“Our kicking game was way better, Mitch Cornish was great, in the first half he had three repeat sets and I think the Tigers kicked it dead on five occasions.

“That helped us set a platform for the game.”

The Roos lined up with a relatively new 17 compared to seasons of late, but

“It’s been wet all week so the conditions weren’t great that’s for sure.

“The Tigers turned over a fair bit more ball than we did, so the boys concentration in trying conditions was good to see.

“It was a good performance from all 17 players.”

The Roos won their match a few hours before the Sydney Roosters defeated the Gold Coast Titans 28-18 last night.

Not all of the Roosters squad made the trip to the Gold Coast however, with some players dropping back to play for Taylor’s side in their emphatic victory.

Dale Copley scored a hat-trick, Jayden Nikorima scored two, while Johnny Tuivasa-Sheck, made his debut on the wing.

“We’ve had a couple of sessions together, the Roosters boys are working hard to fit in,” Taylor says.

“Obviously we are doing the same trying to keep the calls roughly the same with little things like that.

“All of the Roosters boys that have been coming up for a few weeks now have come over and not been kicking stones, they’re just trying to improve their footy and get to where they want to

Some incredibly clever kicks out of dummy half by McInnes put the Tigers on the back foot, and their forwards were forced to constantly work – which consequently caused some fatigue to kick in. Walker was in on the action again when he pounced on a loose ball, flew through a hole and successfully took on the Tim Moltzen to score his second try of the day, which brought the score to 26-8. The final 15 minutes of the game did not see any tries; however there was an outstanding run by Wests Tigers’ centre Nathan Milone - who almost scored after breaking a number of tackles.…

The Wyong Roos spine including their interchange hooker stepped up in what is a critical part of the season to hunt down an early Newcastle lead and win a 30-22 thriller. Mitch Cornish and Jayden Nikorima were instrumental in the halves, Luke Sharpe was as devastating as ever, Mitch Williams put in a true captains knock and Grant Garvey made a massive impact off the bench in promising signs for the Roos just one week out from finals. Sharpe was up against Nick Meaney in the battle of the fullbacks at Morrie Breen Oval; two players in the running to make the Intrust Super Premiership NSW team of the year to be announced just after the season-proper. The Kansas City Chiefs have put themselves on the proverbial ropes the first 4 weeks of the 2015 NFL season, losing 3 out of those first 4 contests, two in heartbreaking fashion. It seemed a welcome reprieve would be the dysfunctional franchise from the Windy City, otherwise known as the “Monsters of the Midway”. The 2015 version of the Chicago Bears resembled nothing even close to your grandpa’s Midway Monsters. The Bears were weak at the wide receiver position, and quarterback Jay Cutler had missed half of the games already this year due to injury. The defense was suspect and the offense even more so.…

The Homeside couldn't get through the Jets defence so halfback Sam Williams opted for a cross field kick on the halftime siren which found flanker Alofi Mataele, who put the pill down for their first for the afternoon. A great sideline conversion from Williams saw them trail 16-6 at the break. Mounties came out on top of Newtown in a high-energy match, that has seen them earn not just a week off, but a spot in the Preliminary Finals. Jeff Lima showed all of his experience in the match, having the game of his life with some incredible charges mixed with a never-before-seen ball playing ability to set up various tries. Mounties were missing Sam Williams, but that did not seem to bother them as they ran in five tries to down the Jets 30 points to 12. Both sides displayed plenty of energy in the opening stages of the match, but none more so than the in-form Jarrad Kennedy, who broke open the Newtown left-edge defence just six minutes into the game, and set up a try for the lingering Zac Santo to open Mounties’ account under the…

From personal experience, the feeling of a reward after hard work is the best feeling ever. It's one thing to win, but to win by coming back from a deficit of 1-0 or more is incredible. After the second match, Coach Sanders pulled us all together as a team, and he gave us an uplifting speech. Coach Sanders told us we can’t lose focus although we are winning. He also said we have to keep our foot on the gas and whip their tails, and he reminded us of all the Friday weight room workouts we had gone through to reach this point.
