Short Story 'The Veldt' By Ray Bradbury

When people think of technology, most think of their phones or vehicles or their televisions. One truth about technology is that it is constantly becoming faster, more efficient, and is becoming more of our lives every day. Most people are not intimidated by technology and see it as a useful convenience of life that we could not live without, however some realize, like Ray Bradbury, the potential threat technology poses to humanity. Bradbury was very aware even in his time that technology could become out of control. In Bradbury’s short story “The Veldt”, parents depend too much on technology and it leads to their death. In his story “There Will Come Soft Rains”, Bradbury writes about a home that survived a nuclear bomb because it was so advanced it could withstand it. This is shown when the story says, “Ten o’clock. The sun came out from behind the rain. The house stood alone in a city of rubble”. Nuclear weapons are a product of technology, and they also have the ability to wipe out everything in a matter of minutes. Another way of thinking is that every deadly product of technology has been utilized for destruction from machine guns to airplanes. In an article from Stanford University, it says, “History shows folly in hoping that each new amore destructive weapon will not be used. And yet we dare to hope that this time it will be different. We and the Soviets combined own over 50,000 nuclear weapons, equivalent to 6,000 World War II’s, capable of reaching targets in minutes, and able to wipe out every major city in the world” (Stanford University).
