How would you react if you left your family behind and after a very long time returned home to see them? We aren’t talking like a week or even a month I mean after years and years of not communicating with one another. You would feel like you didn’t even recognize the people because they have changed so much. If they lived in another country and you return there you could be shocked about how completely strange and foreign their concepts are to you. This is what happened in son from America. He returned to his Jewish village that he lived in as a boy with every intention to help them out with his vast amounts of wealth, but they didn’t want it. There are three instances where I believe I can connect what I researched to the short story. The first instance is when Berlcha said, ““It’s Friday – I have to prepare for the Sabbath.” Yes, she had to knead the dough and braid the loaves”(Singer, 163). This quote connects to my research because it shows that they have to prepare the food they want to eat on the Sabbath the day before because they are not bake. Proved by some of the rules for the Sabbath “…Kneading, baking…” (Shabbat, 1). The second way I can connect my research to the short story is when Berl said “One is not allowed to touch money on the Sabbath, but I will show you” (Singer, 165). This also connects with all the rules that must be followed on the Sabbath. My third and final way I can connect my research to the short story The Son from America is when “Berlcha began to recite in a solemn singsong, “God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, defend the poor people of Israel and Thy name” (Singer, 165). This connects with my research because in my research I found that “Shabbat is the most important ritual observance in Judaism and is the only ritual observances instituted in the Ten Commandments” (What is the Shabbat?, 1).
