Superior Essays
Believe me… I sat in the cell waiting to hear the verdict of my future. Am I going to die? Am I going to live? Will I see my mom again? All these questions going through my head while realizing 12 guys who don’t know me are going to set my future up for me. I woke up this morning absolutely certain I was going to die, thinking it would only take them 10 minutes and I would be dead in the next 24 hours. 2 hours, 2 hours I have been sitting here wondering if I was going to die, those men taking their time is making my very hopeful, ‘Maybe someone believes me, maybe someone is fighting for me.’ The statement is ridiculous in it’s own, Marcus made sure everything pointed towards me, I didn’t kill me father, we didn’t get along for sure but I …show more content…
Something didn’t feel right though, something just felt off… Then I realized what it was, Marcus has got Toby into the gang. They were selling drugs to a tweaker, I swear I am going to leave this place and start fresh. I walked to over to my friend, “Hey Alex”, Jake said, still looking looking over at our former close friend and Jake’s twin brother, Toby. “Hey bro, Toby really left huh?” Jake looked lost without Toby, he finally shook his head trying to clear it and said, “It’s whatever, at least me and you got each other 's back. No matter what.” Holding up his hand for our handshake, “No matter what Jake.” After our handshake, I heard footsteps getting close to us, and then the disgusting smell of mixed alcohol, marijuana and cigarettes, I turned around to be faced with Marcus Tribolt, member of of the Eastside gang, “Alex! My main man!” Marcus exclaimed with a smirk on his face. “What do you want Marcus?” With clear annoyance in my voice, “What I do want? See I want a lot of things like a new car, new house, and well of course, for you to be in the Eastside Gang you see you are a great knife fighter. We want you in the gang.” Marcus said happily. This guy is persistent. “Marcus, I told you before and this is the last time I am going to tell you this. I, Alexander Delgado, am not, and never will be, in your gang.” I said with absolute certainty. Marcus got furious, his face went red with anger, I thought at some point there was steam coming out of his ears. Marcus took a step closer to me and bent down alittle so our faces were inches apart, I smell the stale alcohol and cigarettes on in breath, I wanted to puke, he then said four words that stayed in my head all day and they were, “You will regret that”. With that he walked away taking his disgusting breath with him. “What do you think he meant by that,

“While many struggle for survival, others in the same society enjoy the benefits of great wealth.” (3, Rothman) The aspect of racial and economic oppression within the modern United States is unquestionable and has been since the beginning of our country as we know it. Although we have made improvements, whether they are far and few between, it does not ensure a colorblind society. In Punished by Victor Rios, besides labeling, opportunity theory of crime is the most visible in the lives of the young men because for most of the participants, the only available opportunities for survival are through crime or other deviant behavior. In chapter 3, Rios follows two boys who each found their way into crime because of the lack of other options. In the case of Tyrell, with his father being unable to get a real job, Tyrell saw selling drugs as the only way to make money with which to support himself. “They chose to commit a crime,” Rios comments of the boys in his study, “consciously calculating the potential risk of arrest and incarceration. Sorry for the deception, but since you are already here please read on. I may not have ten reason that I will die alone, but I firmly believe they will find me one day, lazy-boy in the recline position, a spilled glass of scotch by my side (hope it’s the cheap stuff; hate to waste anything good), my NETFLIX queue empty, and a cat sniffing at my rotting corpse (wait, I don’t have a cat – how did he get in here?) It may not work out exactly like that, perhaps I will go quietly in my sleep with family at my side, but I’m pretty sure I won’t leave a second wife behind as a widow.…

Every week, time after time, month after month, alone in silence with nothing but the view and envy that I had felt for that one hour, which time and presence wouldn't allow to go away. That freedom was what I wanted -being an outcast- not being forced into fake friendships because I had been conditioned from an early age by my peers to learn there is no such thing as a real friend.
