The short story “Some of Us Had Been Threatening Our Friend Colby” has several displays of irony. Two examples of irony are the story teller knows that that the hanging is against the law, yet states they have the moral obligation to follow through. Also, when describing the celebration details Colby’s friends express that money was no object, but when approached with the drawings for a gibbet, one friend says that after other party favors had been paid for, that the price of the construction is too costly.
