“shells” by cynthia rylant is a realistic short story about a couple who have a weak relationship the kid, michael, who lost his parents and lives with an old grumpy woman who accuses him of hating her. in the beginning michael is adopted by his mom’s sister who is complaining constantly and excludes him from her life. soon esther tries to help michael by including him and not complaining. in the end michael realises that esther isn't so bad after all. this story shows that if you can love any relationship can be better. one way this story shows love can bond people is, esther, in the beginning, complained about michael and left him out. then at the end loves him. for example in paragraph 26, esther is trying to help michael by not leaving him out. the author says, “esther, for a change, was not on the phone and was waiting for him to walk in.” esther’s love for michael comes out out bit by bit. this shows that …show more content…
esther shows this not to michael but to michael from his crab’s point of view. for example in paragraph 41 esther thinks they both need companions, the crab needs a friend, and michael needs a parent. the narrator and esther say, “michael comes home one day to find esther on his bed looking at slugo, (the crab), esther turns to face michael and says, ‘i think he needs a companion.’” this shows that esther realises michael is lonely. love can transform a person's life from good to bad. michael is struggling to find a relationship without his parents, and is left with his grumpy old aunt esther. he tries to escape but she is blocking his way. his aunt esther doesn't care about him, and doesn't let him have anything. then she starts to understand that he is hurt and needs a parent. she then tries to be a better parent than what she is. then michael loves her at the end. this shows that esther loved him enough to be a good enough
