Short Story: Potato Girl

My hands shook furiously as Keith Shadis paced up and down around the other cadets. Chest pounding at what felt like 1000 beats a minute, I prayed that Shadis wouldn't come close to me. After seeing the way he had already interagated potato girl I don't think I would be able to handle talking to him.

"Hey calm down. It's gonna be okay," I heard a voice whisper to me. I whipped my head around to see that Zoe was standing there. She was standing tall and confidently, unlike myself who was still shaking violently and holding back tears in my eyes.

"Zoe! I thought you had left me. Where have you been?," I asked. She just put a finger to her lips and motioned me to look forward again. I turned back around and there in front of my eyes was Shadis,

I felt warm tears streaming down my face. I knew there was nothing to be upset about but I was now beginning to regret joining the military in the first place. After a few more minutes of listening to Shadis' booming voice we were dismissed. I immediately turned around to see Zoe with her arms open, ready to hug me as she always did when I had been crying.

"Hey Elias, don't cry. I'm pretty sure something crawled up Shadis' ass and died there. He didn't need to shout at you like that. Come on, let's go to the dorms. You look like you need some sleep." Zoe let go of me and started to walk towards where the dorms were. I wiped my eyes with my jacket and began to trail behind. If I have Zoe here with me, I'm sure I'll be able to survive the military... for now.

After Zoe and I went to the dorms to get an hour of rest we headed to the mess hall. I looked around to see other cadets making friends and preparing for the hard training we'd have to go through for the next 3 years. Zoe and I walked towards the first free table we could see and sat down.

"So where were you earlier?," I asked Zoe as when I tried to ask earlier I was interrupted by
