Our Haven

“Isabelle, Lena...I have to talk to you girls.” My mom says from her room that was down the hall. My sister Lena and I walk down the creaky hallway of Saint Eleanor Hospital. The noise of lady groaning in pain caught my attention. The lady had no legs and used her old, bony arms to push her towards her next destination. My mom’s room quickly was approaching more than I wanted it to. I need more time to prepare myself for the woman I would see. She wouldn't have any hair and was very bloated with tumors covering every ounce of her body that you could imagine. It was no coming back from that and we all knew the time was soon approaching. We were just counting down the days. The doctor said she would only have a few more weeks

My father that almost was having a panic attack thinking about the love of his life, the mother of his two daughters dying, stood up for and my sister and I followed. We thought it would be good news but then we saw Doctor Reynold’s face and it was not one was anticipated on. He had a straight face on and it was so disappointing. “How is she?!” My dad asked anxiously.“I am so sorry to inform you that the surgery went as planned, in the beginning...but then she died twice on the table and we saw that the cancer already had spread throughout her body. We weren't quick enough...I'm so sorry.” “Jesus Christ! She's dead...You damn doctors killed my wife?!” My dad yelled loud enough that the whole hospital could hear. “No.. Mr.Ryans, your wife is still alive. She's not awake yet but she just got settled into her room. “Oh thank God, she's okay. Can we see her?” “Yes, but there is some bad news…” “Okay...I will just have to be strong for all of us” he says kissing Lena’s forehead first and then mines.“Lay it on me doc.” “Okay, so since we have seen that JoAnne’s cancer has progressed, there is nothing else we can do. She has to stay here until she… You know but she has a couple weeks.”... That's all I can remember from that conversation but that was a tough one to handle now that I …show more content…
I bolted upright in my bed. My eyes were the size of gumballs as I stared at my Toni Braxton poster that hung on my dark purple wall. I took deep breaths and my heart rate slowed and I laid back down in my bed. As soon as my head made contact with my unfluffed pillow with a blue pillowcase on it, my alarm echoed. I threw my alarm clock at the wall knocking down an old frame that I forgot was apart of my decor. I then knew that was my cue to start getting ready for my day. I completed my hygiene and made my way to the shower. While I was inside, my mind went blank and everything was quiet except for that noise the knife made as it slid across the wall that the man was holding. I never saw the man face but something kept telling me before it was too late. I brushed it off and went on to wash my brown naturally curly hair that reminded me of my mom. After using my purple lavender hair conditioner, I washed it out as it went smoothly down my back and mixed with the hot water that stayed at the bottom and hung out around my feet. Soon after, I got out and got dressed. After putting on my pink scrub top that matched perfectly with these purple bottoms I had from years ago, my pager went off. Before I checked it, I went by the wall to retrieve the frame that I made fall earlier that morning. My pager went off again and I checked it. It read “ALL HANDS ON DECK, INCOMING. 911” I clipped the pager on my

Throughout my life, I have been the victim of several burglaries. At the age of seven, someone, in broad daylight, broke into our house and shot my dad in the chin. I was displaced to my aunt's house for weeks and missed most of my 1st grade year. When I was seventeen, I walked in on my home being robbed by some local kids. They were upstairs when I came into the house and escaped through a window, but the idea that I could have come home earlier still haunts me.…

Thousands of thoughts raced through my mind.........figuring out what to do. My idea so far was *run up the stairs and try to "distract"the being, then pull the door shut and then lock it* it sounded cliche in my head, but i figured I didn't have any other choice but to die otherwise. So I set my plan into action. I quietly stepped up the unstable wooden planks of the slanted hallway towards the open door.…

I had woken up on Saturday morning, my stomach growling like an angry tiger begging for food, my eyes puffy and red, black streaks running down my cheeks, my throat hoarse and my voice gone from the events that took place the night before. I felt my hair and pictured my mothers’ fingers running through it while stroking my back in order to get me to fall asleep. Throwing my legs off the bed, my purple fuzzy socks touching the cold wooden floor, I picked myself up and walked over to my dresser mirror where I was taken aback to see my thick curly hair sticking up in all directions and the dried up drool crusted on the side of my face along with my red lipstick from the night before smeared all around my lips as if I were a clown. I thought…

The last rays of sun streaked through the purple clouds at a sharp angle as I cut behind the old warehouse. I jammed my hands in the pockets of my worn denim jacket and skirted the thin line of trees headed toward the Ordox. The Ordox was nothing really; just a clearing beside the tracks behind mostly abandoned factories. Sheltered from view by the old buildings, the hard packed dirt and cracked concrete looked like a moonscape.…

Blows My Mind If we shall be found guilty of anything on the Day of Judgement, it will not be because we believed too much but that we believed too little about all the things God intended for us to experience in this lifetime and eternity. St. Paul, quoting his predecessor the Prophet Isaiah, wrote “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Corinthians 2:8) June was a tall redheaded senior of Irish decent and full of life.
