The crunching sound of cheerio’s under her white double strap Birkenstocks broke the silence of the still but eerie evening. She didn’t bother locking her Suzuki Swift, she wouldn’t be going back to her 16th birthday present anyway. The breeze along with cold spits of rain had settled into the air, with the hairs on her arms and legs shooting straight up. It didn’t bother her, she liked the feeling of discomfort, it distracted her. Her knuckles turned white from gripping the barrier of the bridge so hard, the sound of the crashing waves on the rocks beneath her were swiftly brought to her attention. Moments later she snapped back to reality, quickly realising she had some familiar company. The skinny girl from cereal isle and the handsome guy that served her. In a silent agreement they nodded, previously blinded by the fact that although they had their differences, they are much the same. With there new found likeness, they wanted to share one last thing in commen, their final breath.

The emaciated women with her spindly arms, sunken face and bony chest walks into the supermarket. Head down, her frail legs carry her past the baking and confectionary isle, where she then turns right, now confronted with countless cereals. Not long after Social Anxiety edges her way out of her Suzuki Swift, taking a deep breath in before the sliding doors to the shop opens. As she closes her umbrella, it becomes obvious she has dressed to blend in, with the low fringe, sun glasses and a black hoodie. She looks down at her watch, which read 7:50pm, meaning only 10 minutes before closing

Throughout the short story “The Weather” by Deborah Willis there are many present themes, perhaps the most common and recurring one is how people can affect each other and their relationships, and how fast they can change between “passion and sweetness and sadness.” The ever changing relationships between the three main characters Edith, Braden, Rae and even Nina, the non-existent mother, are a constant drama throughout the story. The changes between Edith and her father is ever-changing, in the beginning her hostility towards her father is increasingly present when Braden, her father recalls how she said to her mother after the storm “Even then, she used that cold tone. “He’s here, mom.…

No more days of Schwinn Flyers, top-heavy with waxed dailies, free-lock folded, crackling down wet, 4:30-a.m. blacktop – neighborhood heroes’ hands, chaffed, cut and blackened, gripping the bars. No more years of apprenticeship focused on: a cheeseburger, malt and jukebox tune, flaunted in a single diner trip, or bold days decked out in satin shirts, two-tone patent leather shoes with taps all around, pink, suede, super-thin belts, and a strut. And, no more keen, proud, serious men growing inside sleepy-eyed boys, eating yesterday’s donuts with coffee.…

Mother Teresa once said "If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” Judgment is something we as humans inherently fear yet, we dare to impose it upon others. However, when people are at their utmost vulnerable there is no force greater that human compassion. I believe that like Mother Teresa we should all strive to judge less rather, we should help to alleviate the suffering of others. I have spent many summers volunteering at a food pantry in inner city Fort Wayne.…
