Cokie Roberts wrote “Founding Mothers” in an effort prove that women played a pivotal role in the making of America, while Mercy Otis Warren wrote “Woman’s Trifling Needs” as American propaganda during the revolution, expounding on the evils of purchasing finery from tyrants. The two pieces of literature share a common focus on the absolutely critical role of women in the war against Britain, even if they were written 225 years apart in vastly different styles. The impact of their time periods was equally important for both women- Mercy Otis Warren lived in the midst of a war with Britain for eight years, while Cokie Roberts grew up seeing the slow but steady evolution of women’s roles in American politics during the mid 1900’s. Both…

A compilation of interviews with the women of early Oklahoma, Women Who Pioneered Oklahoma tells the compelling stories of individuals from a wide range of social groups and ethnic backgrounds. Before 1828, women in present-day Oklahoma created families, nurtured their children, farmed, and engaged with neighbors (Baker and Oliver 4). The signing of the Indian Removal Act of 1930 brought an era of women pioneers who traveled to the Indian Territory with their families. The opening of the territory to white settlement and the Civil War brought subsequent waves of settlers who came to the frontier seeking homes (4). The stories in Women Who Pioneered Oklahoma paint a picture of the lives of pioneer women in the first century of Oklahoma: how they came to the Indian Territory, the lives that they created, the conditions that they lived in, the dangers that they faced, how mixed populations coexisted, the violence…

What do you make of the irony that women were often treated quite well in Indigenous traditions and yet, today, Native American women are the group of women that experience the highest incidence of domestic violence? My reaction: It upsets me to think about the violence that women are experiencing throughout all cultures. For Native American women to be experiencing the highest domestic violence I feel at fault. If it weren 't for colonization and the “whites” invading the Native American territory the concept of women being less than men would never have been introduced to the Native American culture.…
