Short Story Of The Dingy Van

Improved Essays
As the dingy van drove into the middle of nowhere the monotonous radio hummed the same tune. The music stopped. ‘Yesterday night, Amy Andrews, age 13, was reported by her mother. Police believe she was abducted by a dangerous group. If you know anything about her whereabouts, please contact the police’. The music started playing. Maybe there was a chance I could go home.

The noises broadcast by the government increases in intensity and violence during the course of the course of the story, paralleling the escalating tragedy of George’s and Hazel’s lives. When the story begins, a buzzer sounds in George’s head as he watches the ballerinas on TV. As he tries to think about the dancers, who are weighed down and masked to counteract their lightness and beauty, the sound of a bottle being smashed with a hammer rings in his ears. When he thinks about his son, he is interrupted by the sound of twenty-one guns firing, an excessively violent noise that foreshadows Harrison’s murder. Thought about the laws of quality and the competition that existed in the old days are shattered by the sound of a siren, a noise that suggest the extent to which the government has literally become the thought police.…

In today’s society, people are encouraged to adapt to the movement of political correctness as to not offend anyone. According to Princeton, political correctness is “avoidance of expressions or actions that can be perceived to exclude or marginalize or insult people who are socially disadvantaged or discriminated against.” While preventing discrimination is the alleged goal of the movement, I believe it is counterproductive and on the contrary instills intolerance and ignorance. One of the biggest goals of the political correctness movement is to adjust our language to be more sensitive to those who are discriminated against by race, sex, religion, etc. However, this adaptation does not show acceptance but instead points…
