Short Story Of The Cask Of Amontillado

My memories are bleak, I have little recollection of the events that lead my friend, Montresor, to chain me within this recess. I remember I saw Montresor at the height of Carnival, dressed in a dark grey robe. I approached him, and he greeted me with a smile. I just assumed that he wasn’t mad about what I had said. This surprises me now, but then I had enough alcohol that it seemed as if everything were fine. After some conversation, he said that he received a pipe of amontillado, yet he didn’t trust the dealer, rightfully. He needed someone to put his suspicions to rest. He suggested Luchesi, but I knew, even whilst drunk, that he couldn’t tell amontillado from sherry. I had to be the one to satisfy his doubts. He lead me down to his vaults, …show more content…
I had not taken but two steps into the recess when I hit some cold, hard object. I stood in wonder, while my friend jumped on the opportunity to put me in chains. I was stuck to the wall. He began to play upon me, imploring me to return. He walked over to the other side of the tunnel, and put the flambeaux into the sconce. I saw him moving his arm. I couldn't tell what it was he was doing. It became apparent almost immediately. He returned bearing something quite heavy. As be brought it closer I could see what it was. A pile of bricks. He was going to fill the entrance to the recess, trapping me inside. I shook the chains in an attempt to get free, he was at the third tier by this point. He stopped and sat down. I continued for many minutes, until I tired. He began again after I had ceased. He was getting closer to completion, in vain, I yelled, it echoing through the tunnels. I heard the sound of Montresor's Rapier being drawn. Silence. Suddenly, an echoed scream came from my friend louder and stronger. I was terrified. I stopped trying. He had shown me that we were deep under a river, far under any ear that may hear my screams. The wall was complete and my demise seemed so as well. I tried to convince myself that he was joking, and I was going to be let out any

The “Trifles” play, published by Susan Glaspell, started off the play with the prime suspect that killed Mr. Wright being Mrs. Wright, his wife. On the other hand, in “The Cask of Amontillado”, published by Edgar Allan Poe, the narrator started off with Montresor plotting to on taking his revenge on Fortunato. As much as there are similarities in both the play and story, there are also differences that distinct both the narrators. For instance, in “The Cask of Amontillado”, the reader will immediately know that Fortunato’s killer was Montresor. During the end of the story, when Fortunato was being buried alive, he said, “It was now midnight, and my task was drawing to a close….…

Montresor’s charm plays in the most when he flatters Fortunato’s knowledge of wine and therefore manipulates him into wanting to follow Montresor into his vaults. Montresor continues by exploiting Fortunato’s knowledge and fondness of wines when after he tells Fortunato that he has come across a cask of Amontillado, he successfully lures him into his trap when he states “I am on my way to Luchresi. If anyone has a critical turn it is he. He will tell me—,” to which Fortunato is fully convinced that Montresor did indeed have the Amontillado and was intent on joining him (Poe…

He thought he heard a cry simultaneous with the second report, but he was not sure. He peered again through the hedge, at the two dark figures under the tree. They had fallen a little apart from each other, and were perfectly still—No, not quite; in a white patch of light, where the moon shone through the branches, a man's hand was plucking spasmodically at the…

Edgar Allan Poe’s story The Cask of Amontillado is the creepiest short story of his. The other two short stories of his are The Black Cat and The Tell Tale Heart. All three are creepy stories, but The Cask of Amontillado is the creepiest. The Cask of Amontillado is the creepiest because the narrator shoved a guy in a corner and trapped him to die, the narrator has an underground catacomb, and the narrator had planned the death of Fortunato.…

As seen in the short stories “The Weapon” by Fredric Brown and “The Cask Of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Pot people never seem to realize or understand how strong a person's power is until the damage is done, people will use weakness of others as their power or to their advantage and no matter how big or small the damage done to a person they will seek revenge. Throughout these short stories the audience realizes that people who abuse power often cause more damage than expected. Early in the story Montresor has a plan and begins to manipulate Fortunato with friendship. Montresor comes across Fortunato at the carnival and approaches him in a friendly matter stating how well he looks and even telling Fortunato he was foolish to pay full price for what he assumed to be Amontillado without consulting him first. After this encounter Montresor had completed his step trust and at this point…

Montresor does not consider himself a despicable man as he notes “You, who so well know the nature of my soul” (Poe, para. 1). However, because his patience has already run thin he can’t bear the abuse anymore. The following lines illustrate this idea, “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge” (Poe, para. 1). It seems to me that Montresor is a good man who has been enduring the abuse of Fortunato for an extensive time. After reaching his limit, Montresor believes that he is entitled to carry out revenge without facing punishment since he has the worthy purpose of restoring fairness.…

(Jacoby)” Montresor manipulated Fortunato into thinking he was a friend of his and continued to go to great lengths to fulfill his deceitful plans of vengeance. Montresor is a very intriguing character who seems to have multiple personas throughout the short story. At first Montresor convinces the reader that he has the right to punish Fortunato for his wrong doing, but when Montresor lacks to explain exact details of these “injuries” it becomes clear to the reader that Montresor is an extremely unstable narrator, who just doesn’t seem to have a sense of reason or forgiveness. Montresor verbally, physically, and mentally tortured Fortunato with his lack of rational behavior that exempted him of all logical reasoning and justification of the dispute and miscommunication between the two characters. The outcome of Montresors revenge was extremely daunting; he exposed himself to be a very deceitful and a demented…

Montresor shares that Fortunato has added insult to injury and that he will not allow him to get away with such acts, and for that reason, Montresor carefully plans and executes revenge in the form of a live burial. Montresor lures Fortunato into the catacombs by offering him Amontillado, but in reality, Fortunato is being led to his imminent death.
