John Glena, a fourteen year old boy, about 6’ 8” tall and weighed 225 pounds. He was all muscle; people thought he was 21 years old, but he wasn't. John was getting into a lot of trouble with the law. He would steal cars and chocolate bars. But his parents didn't care. John’s mom, Kailey, and dad, James, were divorced. John’s dad was in the army, so he couldn’t do much about his problems. John’s mom didn’t do anything for him either because she was never home. She is either out drinking, doing drugs, or sleeping.
So one day John came home and was surprised to see his mom there. He said to his mom, “I know I'm 14, but can you sign this paper so I can go into the army.”
His mom said, “I'll sign it but you have to promise me that you will come home to your family.”
John said “I will.”

He was afraid that he would see his dad there. That would be bad because he's only 14 and he lied about his age.
When John got there, the drill Sergeants were already yelling and making people do push-ups. Then after a couple of hours, it got dark out. John and other guys from the platoon went to the mess hall to eat. He could hear guys in the back saying, “I hope the food is good.”
John turned around and said, “The food isn't good here.”
