Edward Said once wrote “Exile is strangely compelling to think about but terrible to experience. It is the unhealable rift between a human being and a native place, between the self and it’s true home: its essential sadness cannot be surmounted,” however Said also stated exile can be “a potent, even enriching” experience. The Poisonwood Bible, a novel written by author, Barbara Kingsolver, features a young girl, Leah Price, who experiences exile in both of these manners and is completely changed by her experience while living in the Congo as a missionary’s daughters. Leah Price is exiled from her father, her homeland, and her entire belief system, all of which she believed defined her as a young woman. In my opinion, every single member of the Price family grows and changes over time. Some characters are drastically dynamic while some are borderline static, but there are notable changes in every character in The Poisonwood Bible. This change mainly comes from the setting of the story. The Price family moves to the Congo in 1959. The Congo is very trying and a miserable place to live in, changing each family member individually and the dynamics of the family as a whole.…

Harriet Jacobs’ recounting of her life through Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl has not only exposed the great pains she suffered through during her time in slavery but has exposed deep rooted ideologies of black women in American society. Although the actions perpetuating these ideologies have since been abolished, the ideals themselves have been retained through multiple generations of teaching. Jacobs’ story has successfully exposed where the ideologies may have come from through her explanations of sexual corruption, mental manipulations, and power dynamics. Jacob’s made it clear that these struggles were not unique to her but were dealt with by all black women during slavery and in the ‘free world’. These struggles have been most notably re exposed through the Women’s Liberation movement which actively excluded black women.…

I picked the book Elves Once Walked with Gods, by James Barclay, because I am addicted to elves and my mom saw it at a bookstore and decided to give it to me. The battle was somewhat depicted on the front of the book with one of the main characters holding up a sword in the middle of the forest. It is about how an elf, named Takaar, who was shunned and vilified by his own race is requested to save…
