Short Story Of Daniel Boone

Daniel Boone (D.B.) Kyles, an Arizona placer miner, stands before the trading post where he periodically buys supplies. Ghost, the miner's mule, waits at a hitching post. Looking at the storefront, Daniel notices “Uncle Sam” enlistment posters and patriotic slogans, added since his last visit. Two old-timers, sitting on a bench, gossip about a local kid committing suicide when he couldn’t enlist. War didn't surprise Daniel, since it was anticipated throughout the Depression.

Inside the trading post, Mr. Boyce Mahoney, Store Proprietor, tells Daniel about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, a couple months back. Seeing Daniel apparently fit and under thirty, Mahoney assumes that Daniel wants to enlist, but is shocked when Daniel expresses
